hi guys is this still a competant card ? i think its about 2 years old now but i still hear good things about it, can it cope with the latest games ?

thanks

would be better if we had any idea what your system is that you use and resolution ?

the system is one im building up in parts, got a
600w coolermaster RS-600 PSU
athlon 64
2gig ram
the card in it at the moment is faulty, its a 6800xt and it keeps saying its not getting enough power (hence why i bought the PSU first to test it)

resolutions i have no idea yet maybe 1280 i dont tend to go much higher than that i havent exactly had the best gaming rigs in the past :S

im trying to upgrade it in parts for a decent mid range gaming rig

Aye, the 4890 is still a good card - it performs a bit better than a HD 5770/6770 and will generally play modern games well at 1080p res.

However, with a slow CPU like an athlon 64 and a low resolution (presumably 1280x1024) then in the vast majority of games the performance will be limited by the CPU, not the 4890.

May I ask what make and model number motherboard you are using?

aye mobo and cpu need upgrading too the mobo is ms-7184 ver 1.0 it says on it

At £50 new you can't really go wrong for a card that's about as fast as a 6790, though you do lose DX11 (hardly relevant though).
