Tory plans in a Pickle . . . yet again!

To be fair, the story is all over the news and papers today.

Has anything changed since the letter was written to make it any less valid?

David Cameron has been warned by one of his most trusted cabinet ministers that his welfare policies risk making 40,000 families homeless. The extraordinary claim, in a letter to the prime minister from the office of Eric Pickles, the communities secretary, exposes deep splits at the heart of government over plans to cap benefit at £500 a week per family.
...
  • 40,000 families will be made homeless by the welfare reforms, putting further strain on services already "seeing increased pressures".
  • An estimated £270m saving from the benefits cap will be wiped out by the need to divert resources to help the newly homeless and is likely to "generate a net cost".
  • Half of the 56,000 affordable homes the government expects to be constructed by 2015 will not be built because developers will realise they will not be able to recoup even 80% of market rates from tenants.
...
Jenny Willott, the Liberal Democrat welfare spokeswoman who has already warned that a rigid cap would increase child poverty, said she remained "very worried" about the proposals, which are due to come into effect in 2013.
...
Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, the charity for the homeless, said: "With 21% of people struggling to meet housing costs, it's naive to think you can cut support without putting some people at risk of losing their home. The coalition government should stop bulldozing through badly thought-through policies while ignoring independent evidence, its own expert panel and the views of those who will deal with the very real impact on people." (The Observer)
If you disagree with Pickles' assessment that the Tories are bulldozing through badly thought-through policies while ignoring independent evidence, do please feel free to write to Cameron explaining why Pickles is not only fat but stupid as well.

As to the Tory fanboys here who knew all about this six months ago, how did you get to hear about it? Why on earth didn't you let me know?

Anyone else get annoyed by the OP's misuse of the wink emoticon? We should probably introduce a :SMUG: emoticon to help him out.

Yes - actually, whenever I read ";)" by stockhausen my brain automatically overrides what I'm seeing and shows me this instead:

What awesome news. Its the end of lazy cheating scum who pop out kids at my expense.

We really don't need any other party than the Conservatives. We should make the other ones illegal.

Cut those damn benefits, just move somewhere cheaper ! benefits shouldn't be national average, should be national minimum

This is exactly what they did in the '90s as well. We had whole families living in grotty inner-city B&Bs after losing their homes. The B&B owners of course charged the government a fortune for housing them and it ended up costing us taxpayers a lot, increasing the deficit too.

Imagine having £2500 a month to spend on rent!
I don't know, but I imagine that £2500 a month rent for a family in London and the South East wouldn't be excessive? Of course, the family could always be forced to move to an area of high unemployment and consequent low rents ;)

Most of us cannot afford the luxury of living in the most affluent and desireable area of the country though...

Not entirely sure I understand why those who cannot afford to live in London or the South East must pay, through taxation, for others who pay less tax to live there

On meths, perhaps.

fixed ;)

I'm all for Stockhausens case now, ban these Tories lets go back to Labour instead. Mortgages for all.......oh wait the cant afford to repay them........Multicultural Britain lets embrace those couple of thousand european counterparts.......oh wait 750 thousand wasn't it reported to be instead of about 70 thousand? I forget the numbers. Lets keep records of all our citizens......oh wait they get lost in the post.......

I could go on but I really cant be arsed

I don't understand why there's a lot of people on these boards out to defend the government. They've been far from great, they can't cooperate with each other, and have poorly executed / failed to deliver a number of policies that they’ve promised. And this is in the short time that they've been in government.

hello

The real problem here is below the surface.

The rest of the country is massively subsidising London and at the same time making private Landlords rich, the real problem is how do we rebalance this with out making loads of people homeless.

In my view there are three possible solutions.

1) Tax London businesses a whole lot more to pay for it

2) Build loads of council houses

3) Decentralise (probably would happen as a consequence of 1)

All of these would take a few years to sort out.

I find the reactions of both sides of the political arguement hopeless on things like this, no real solutions at all.

this is possibly a big problem, are the political sides becoming more polarised, if so where do the lib dems stand.

Let them live on the streets, maybe they will get a job then.
