yes it can, they are backward compatible.

dandos i've already disconnected the front audio altogether, so its completely out of the equation.

My next suggestion is one your going to hate, but fortunately doesn't cost you a penny!!!
Build the basic parts of the pc completely outside the case, place the motherboard onto a piece of cardboard.

not entirely prepared to strip out the entire thing, but if it IS the power supply causing fusses (see my previous post), scooping that outside of the case while leaving the rest in might be an alternate approach
