Whilst I love the M5, I would struggle to choose one over that.

I'm one of the few, perhaps, who prefer 4 doors on the M3...

How does one go about getting an M3 as a courtesy car?!

My polite request for an SLS AMG was unfortunately declined. :(

Drop a similar brute into BMW - BipolarKittens e60 M5 - for some repairs and request something similar? ;)

Perhaps he asked nicer than you? :p

I just can't see why a dealer (I'm assuming it is) would give out an M3, a normal 3 series, sure, but an M3?

Very lucky either way.

Over the years, my old man has had , from BMW, M3's, M5's (despite being not interested in such cars) e38 750i's - all sorts as loan cars. His last, before he finally stopped taking it to BMW was a 650i.

I remember him having both e34 and e39 M5's for a weekend each.

Clearly, yes, lucky I suppose.

Knights (Formerly Howarth, formerly Hartshill ) BMW, Staffs btw.

It's a like for like replacement vehicle from a credit hire company following a non fault accident.

I've assumed that much, but I thought like for like meant the actual type of vehicle and didn't consider engine size, etc?

It's good that it does though :)

What does M-DCT feel like compared to the SMG in the M5?

It's worlds apart, mate. It literally changes gear quicker than you can think about it. I like it a lot.

Even in auto mode, it feels smooth unlike the SMG in the M5. Even though I don't, as i'm used to using the paddles on the M5, I would be quite happy leaving it in auto mode while i'm pottering around town. It really is good.
