Indicating on motorways and what it means.

Since getting the '2 I've noticed on the motorway that if i indicate to pull out and change lanes other cars will make a gap and flash me to move. very nice and polite!

However sometimes i press thewind screen wipers instead of indicators.

It's not just a British thing, in fact it worse in mainland Europe. Spent a lot of time over in the Netherlands lately and if you don't change lanes without cutting someone up then your stuck for ages. Only difference is you can sit on peoples bumpers, cut people up, swap and change and you don't get a road rage off some muppet.

Whats a '2?

It's the same with people that wish to pull off from the side of the road they sit there with the indicator flashing, rather than waiting for a gap.

Joining from the hard shoulder on a motorway you should accelerate along it to match the traffic speed before joining the inside lane. Without just using it to undertake a line of vehicles.

Indeed.

...Erm how long are you prepared to sit and wait for a gap??

If you don't indicate then how are people supposed to know you wish to change lanes?

You check your mirrors to check is it safe to perform your planned manouvre.

Signal
You signal the direction you're going to be moving, to ensure other drivers are aware of your imminent movement.

Manouvre
After checking again that you can maneuvre safely, carry it out.

Quite simple really I think. Indicators aren't a "Anyone going to let me out?" device.

Absolutely.

I cannot stand it when I'm in the fast lane making progress - little in my lane in front or behind and some idiot just ahead in the middle lane doesn't even check his mirrors and whacks on his indicator. He may not have impeded me directly but these days it's 50:50 whether he will immediately pull into your path or wait until I'm past - with this in mind, I almost certainly will come off cruise or brake to anticipate his movement - even if it doesn't occur.

I never put on my indicator without first seeing the gap I am about to move into, that way people can safely pass in the meantime and as soon as they're past I will indicate, check again and then move across - thus warning everyone of my actions.

As far as I'm concerned if you're "stuck" behind someone then it's your fault for not anticipating it and pulling out into an available gap first. If I'm in the middle lane with an empty fast lane and see someone stuck I will always indicate out into the outside lane to allow them space to come out to the middle lane. Usually they see this and begin to indicate out themselves.

For you, its a much bigger issue. Is someone pulls out infront of a car you can slow down and hurl abuse as them. If you are in a lorry 'slowing down suddenly' isnt going to happen, a massive crash is.

Me & my fellow truckers have to allow for this daily - all day! - if we didn't, the carnage you would not believe.

Yes, its one hell of an issue.

I use my indicators to indicate my intention to move into a gap. I will obviously wait for a gap to move in to and then indicate once there is one. I'm not one of those ***** that scares the **** off someone by indicating as if I was going to take their bumper off.

I disagree, it depends on the circumstances.

I find a quite common scenario on a motorway is I'm in lane 1 making good progress and there is a steady stream of traffic in lane 2 and an empty/sparse lane 3, I'm quickly approaching a lorry doing 56, I indicate my desire to move to lane 2 and wait, cars in lane 2 see my indicating and move to lane 3 allowing me into lane 2 without changing my speed, after the overtake I move back in to lane 1 and those who moved to lane 3 return to lane 2 everyone is happy no one has touched a brake pedal.

If I were to consider your school of thought I would have to slow to 56mph behind the lorry and wait for a gap then indicate, manoeuvre and speed up to fall in to line with lane 2 traffic. All the while lane 3 goes unused..... seems a less desirable process to me?

The second scenario would ultimately lead to me refusing to use the first lane when there is a reasonable amount of traffic in lane 2 for fear of having to constantly slow for lorries which would make the whole middle lane cruiser situation even worse.

When you guys are on a 3 lane road and someone is in the middle lane but there is next to no traffic around (early morning, late evenings etc) what do you do? On the assumption that due to it being quiet you are in the left hand lane.

Move to the middle then overtake them. What else would you do
