Hi All!

I overclocked my Q9550 to 3.4 GHz (1.352v) and I am not happy with the temps I am getting. Obviously it's not running at 100% all the time, however I was playing some games today and the temp was reaching 68C, which doesn't makes me happy.

I currently have Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and modified Antec 300. My CPU temps were fine at stock speed, never above 50C. I wanted to get Thermalright HR-02, because it would go well with HR-03 GT on my 8800GT, however its out of my budget.

Not sure whether I would need fan on the cooler, because there is 120mm fan on the back and 140mm right above the cooler, but it wouldn't hurt to have one I suppose.

So.... what's the best cooler I can get for my quad for under £35 guys? :)

Thanks!

I would be extremely tempted by the Antec Kuhler Box or Shelf at £16.99. Can't find any reviews but their design should make for far better cooling than the Freezwer 7 Pro.

I think I will go for Corsair A50 or A70 (found one for less than £35) or Thermalright True Black 120 or Ultra-120 eXtreme.

Bought Thermaltake Ultra-120 eXtreme, I've got few spare 120mm fans, so should be ok. I will take some pics after I install it.

A TRUE with a single fan should be fine, though i wouldnt pay to much for one, as they can be had pretty cheap secondhand. Also, what stepping is your cpu, 1.352 vcore seems very high for a 3.4ghz overclock.

its E0, after doing a little bit more reading and looking at other peoples overclocks I realised its too high indeed. I paid £30 for TRUE, so it was within my budget. I just hope it fits or else I will have to make a hole in my window lol

The TRUE will fit perfectly on the p5q dlx, its the combination i used myself with a q6600 and q9550.

Ive just bumped my e8400 up to 4ghz using a TT frio and getting 62c max in 24hours of prime95. Using artic silver 5 and cpu pushing 1.325v

I've been reading various forums and other websites for the past few hours and I finally understand and know how to use every single option of the P5Q dlx BIOS. I wasn't sure about few things like CPU PLL and CPU GTL References, cpu clock skew and few other things, but few hours and google and I know my way forward :)

Gonna post some pics and settings tomorrow. Aiming for 3.4GHz and if the TRUE turns out to be good and give me good temps I am gonna push it to 3.8GHz. Stay tuned for update!

Just checked DPD website and it says that they will deliver the cooler between 15:45 and 16:45, cannot wait :)

That dose seem really high for a 3.4GHz OC, got my 4 year old Q9550 C1 running at 3.4GHz using 1.235.

I know it is, it's a really safe maximum that it should be used. Didn't do my research before I started overclocking my quad. All done now :) I know what values I should use for rest of the settings as well, so I hope I can get to 3.8GHz within few hours. Stay tuned for update!

Did some overclocking and was wondering one thing, if my overclock passes Intel Burn Test, at High Stress Level then I can say that the overclock is stable? I ran it 20 times.

My old Q9550 would pass 20 passes of Linx at 4.2Ghz but then fail after around 15 hours of prime. The best i could do rock solid stable was 4.13Ghz. Still a excellent overclock mind.

Went back to default clocks for now. Heatsink is installed:

Going to overclock it tomorrow as I need more time to test stuff and let the thermal paste settle in. Overall I think the temps are much lower, however the rear fan and cpu fan are connected to motherboard, so beside settings in BIOS i can't really control them. Would be better to have PWM fan, but I think I am going to connect the fan that is on CPU now to fan controller. Need to make some changes in the way they are all connected. Overall I am happy with the purchase :)
