Equality at work - pay

I'm in a situation where myself and a collegue are doing the same job, with the same job title and the same role profile at work however he gets paid quite a bit more than me PA.
I know it's illegal for a man and women to do the same job on different pay but is it illegal for two men to get paid different?
Wasn't there a change in the law last year to prevent this, or do I remember wrong?

Can anyone provice any links if so?

This is very normal and there is no law against it. However, you do have some leverage over your employer to increase your salary assuming you are good at your job and they would not want to lose you.

other guy will no doubt get a bollocking as hes more than likely not alowed to discuss his wage
 
If you are being paid less, it's because you don't deserve any more

a) because you aint good enough
b) because you haven't been there long enough
c) because you have no ability to negotiate being paid more

.... As someone else said, this aint communist russia and you are well within your rights as a free individual to sell your labour somewhere else, or seek a job offer with someone else with a view to your current employer matching your salary.

Complaining about what you get paid, or getting into the 'equality' mindset is a losing strategy.

And i don't mean that to **** you off or anything. I really believe that.
 
Some people in my job get slightly less and some slightly more, ask in your next review how you can get a pay rise. He might turn up on time or be considered to work harder or be more useful or was just higher paid previously, sometimes there is no real reason sadly and they were just paid more in their previous job. But in our company they will usualy explain what you need to do to earn as much.

Seriously though, I've been in this situation and as somebody else has said your colleague may have just negotiated a better salary - you could try the same but the company will look at your experience etc. and make a decision based on that I would have thought :confused:
 
I'm in exactly the same boat, however whats worse is that I have to help the guy out when he can't do the work!!!
 
What a shame that your first thought was 'IS THIS LEGAL' not 'I think I should have a chat to my boss about stepping up in pay now I've been doing a good job for a while...'
 
I'm with Aero i worked with a guy who was absolutely crap at the job i was doing. Was doing it alongside me for a year and i still did 95% of work.

That tool was on £3k more than me a year! My manager rather than discuss just didn't want to up it despite the company making more than £20k a week!

Why would he up it: if you're still willing to work for the current pay?

Clearly he has no reason to upgrade your wages and "he gets more than me" isn't a valid reason.

One thing you need to do is let your boss know how great you are and you'll get a bump... sometimes. :p
