I've just bought a second hand xbox 360 and wanted to know what I should be checking to make sure its working. and how I go about checking it?

Its an Xbox 250GB (the new black one)

Sorry if this seems like an odd question - its my first console in years.

turn it on??

seriously turn it on - if it loads then it works 70%
turn the controller on - does it sync? if yes 80%
insert disk - does it make dodgy sound? if no 90%
install game to drive - does it complete? if yes 100% tested.

nothing much to it really, the new ones are built pretty well.

No slims have been banned yet so that wont be an issue.

Ah right thanks.

Make sure that it doesn't scratch discs ?

Hmm - don't think it does...thanks anyways.

deffo make sure you can go live, make sure the drive come out smooth, controller conects without problems.

Drive comes out smooth....controller connects but sometimes disconnects - I have seen this on a lot of consoles tho...is it a common problem?

EDIT:

Also...whats the deal with being able to copy the games to your hard drive....surely you would just borrow your mates games and copy them to your hard drive and you have the game?

It's quieter (360's are stupidly noisy), cooler (helps with the RQoD problems), most games load quicker and are smoother, and less wear and tear on components.

No, removing the disk with make you go back to the dashboard.

1 - Put disk in
2 - Go to launch game in the dashboard, press Y and install the game to the hard drive
3 - Launch and play the game as normal, and it will use the hard drive version giving you the above advantages.

Well if a brand new one is £159, how much did you pay for 2nd hand?

would like to know as well :D
also regarding buying 2nd hand consoles, just dont do it :D i dont feel like its mine, especially joysticks and all that, get new and feel good even if u have to sacrifice by not wearin socks for a month! :D
