I'm sick of using my phone for snaps that need to be good quality. Looking for a new camera, the stuff I've had before has been £100~ Nikon standard 12mp jobs and they are okay.

I think I'm looking for a Dslr but I don't want it to be massive, I'm never going to buy extra lens' or anything like that. I just want to be able to take really good high quality still photos when I need to.

The ability to focus myself would be nice but most of the time I'm going to be pointing and shooting and expecting it to do everything.

A screen that pops out so that I can see from all angles when I'm getting would be decent.

Price - £300~ I guess but that might be too much for what I want or too little.

Nice healthy price, you can get a top end compact for that. The sensor on these is a lot bigger than traditional compact cameras, so image quality will be great, even under low light.

Canon S95 or G12 (same sensor, so the image quality will be more or less the same. Depends whether you want more direct controls for all your settings at the expense of size (G12), or something truly pocketable but slightly less direct controls for all your settings (S95)).

Olympus XZ-1

Panasonic LX5

Have a look at those, and see which you like the sound of, then go into a store and try them out. Unfortunately none of these have a flippy screen, but they're gonna give you the best image quality a compact can offer.

How about the Sony TX10? Looks a nice camera.

I've no idea what I'm looking for really, before I've always just spent about £80~ and gone for the biggest MP and best optical zoom I could find.

I've been looking for a decent P&S camera to take on holiday. The 2 I've narrowed it down to is Sony HX9V or the Olympus XZ-1. The only other option is the NX100 from Samsung as that's 250 at the moment and I have 3 other samsung lenses already.

The decision is whether I want the zoom and video of the HX9V or the very fast lens of the Olympus.

Out of the Sony HX9V and Olympus XZ-1 which is the better camera? The Sony has an extra 6.1MP which surely counts for something?

Sony NEX-3 not worth a look?

Not really warmed to it I'm afraid.

Probably actually a disadvantage on a sensor that size, the XZ-1 is probably the best compact available today in any event, I'd have that or the Canon S95, or the Panasonic LX5 if I didn't dislike panasonic so much for no real reason. The Sony wouldn't even occur to me to be honest.

The small sensor for £300 just puts me off, as a second camera then maybe but really there is such a difference between a Nex (even micro 4/3rds) or dslr that you may as well go £150-£200 route.
