I love you mate

The funny thing is, I call my male friends mate, but I would never use the expression on female friends, even those worthy of applying some friction with my epic exterior.

Probably comes from the use of it from sailing. E.g the First Mate was someone you should trust implicitly. So sort of fits, no? ;)

Mate is a colloquialism with German or English origins. It is theorised that it started with use by dock workers in the Victorian era. It might also be derived from the Dutch word "maat" which means "friend".
