In a world of my own
So I'm on a Vodafone business plan and get pretty good service out of these guys so I'm not looking to jump to a different provider.

However my iPhone 3GS has developed appalling battery life even with wireless, location services, push notifications all turned off and screen brightness at nearly off. I pick it up out of its cradle at 9am make a few calls, browse the web a bit and by 3pm the battery will be ready to die. I'm not about to pay apple £55 for a replacement as I am due a free handset upgrade.

I love the iPhone and I'm considering the iPhone 4 - however I'd also like to seriously consider an Android phone. Problem is I've never got my hands on one so I'm looking for advice from anyone who may have had experience of both.

I'm thinking of the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Desire as possible alternatives to the iPhone.

Any advice greatly received.

SGS2.

Nothing better atm, its large screen, SUPER AMOLED, and is the top Android phone in the market.

Great phone, read the thread on here :)

I'd do a "/thread" but im too kind :D

Try and borrow an Android phone before getting a long contract on one.

I did manage to have o r for a week and while it had some cool features I eventually went back to an iPhone, mainly due to a better app selection :)

If its Free, i'd say get the iPhone 4, same usability as your 3GS and all your things like emails and stuff will be the same.

Then get a SGS2 to play with :)

The Galaxy S II is the only real alternative to the iPhone 4 (imho). The HTC Sensation is nice but it's hard to call it better.

Try both and see what you prefer, they are both a lot better than the 3GS.

It's worth trying Android depending on how much money you've got invested in iOS apps and so forth.

(I own all of the phones mentioned so far, and I try to be impartial :p)

Maybe he can borrow one of your "spare" iPhone 4's :p

Well, you should know then that if it does everything you'd ever want from a phone, don't bother changing.

Android is just far more customisable software with a worse app store, hardware wise there isn't really much in it, the Galaxy S II hardware is better but it doesn't make a massive difference to anything unless you want a bigger screen.

I really like Android but there are plenty of things I miss about the iPhone. I'm always stuck deciding which phones to use :p

What are the most important things you use your phone for?

As always I'll sneak in and suggest an Omnia 7 with Windows Phone 7 as an alternative to both other systems... ;)

Not as many apps but most of the main ones are there and any others (like skype) will be coming in September with the newest update. No lag, simple but pretty UI and the phone itself is up there with iPhone 4 build quality (Alu back, glass front and a couple of plugs of plastic at each end). It also has the 4" AMOLED screen which is superb with the metro UI and dark background (much more so than the HD7 for example).

I'm currently on a 3GS and looking around at deals.

I note Vodafone business offer the SGS2 for free on a £36 inc vat tariff.

1500 mobile minutes
3000 landline minutes
3250 texts
500mb data

Seems a stonking deal!

Is the Vodafone SGS2 all Voda'd up? Is it easy to make it "sim free". I've played with an old Android handset but nothing recent.
I am very tempted but do like iOS very much...

Thoughts on the above?

For 2 years tesla? Pretty good deal imo.

Would personally be tempted buying it sim free for 350 ish and sticking a giff gaff sim in it on a monthly rolling contract.

That is a very good deal provided you need that many minutes (it's an awful lot) and you can get by on 500MB data.

Yes that's 24 months. Plus £100 quidco cash back which I forgot to mention.

I'm currently with T-Mobile but not impressed with network coverage, despite Orange merger (iPhone doesnt seem to like switching back and forth much anyway!).

I currently have 600 mins but my usage has rocketed recently with work, used 1100 last month at great expense, mainly calling mobiles. giffgaff is £25pm for a 1500min goody bag. If I aim for 1000 mins I don't think the Vodafone deal can be beaten?

Is the SGS2 really only £350 already?

I'd say the LG Optimus 7 is a good WP7 contender, just due to the fact at how cheap it can be had. I replaced my iPhone 3GS with it, and it's absolutely blown it away.

How does Android handle multiple SMTP mailboxes and a Gmail account? This works quite nicely on iOS.

It's around £400, it has been cheap since release really.

If you need that amount of minutes, you aren't going to get a better deal than that really. Also, you have the option of a Sure Signal box for work/home if the signal isn't great, so you won't be stuck at those places at least.

The built in Gmail client is excellent and there are various email apps you can use. I wouldn't say any of them are nice as the iOS ones but they get the job done.

If you're not needing anything more from iOS the iPhone 4 isn't a bad option aside from the fact the iPhone 5 will be here in the next 2/3 months most likely.

Sometimes it's novel to change for change-sake. I am not really into "apps" so the strongest feature of iOS, it's app catalogue is a little lost on me.

I will ponder this Vodafone deal and confirm with T-Mobile I am not in contract (I should be as took a 12 month sim-only deal but on a recent call was told I am on 1 month rolling!).
