Big Bike Thread

... so last night, some serious sh!t went down at work (major services for the O2 and Tesco Mobile network) and I needed to stay awake 'till engineers at the datacentre let me know it's all OK.

So after 4 this morning I started to get bored, so I started trolling Ebay (in stead of forums for a change)

I found this bargain

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150630766347&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Code:
[B]I Emailed the seller[/B] : " WTFLMFAOTROLOLOL?!"

[B]Response from seller[/B]: " W@nker !"

[B]Response from seller again[/B]: " IDIOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

[B]I Emailed the seller again[/B]:

" ...says the man who thinks that
1. that's a Downhill bike
2. That hunkajunk is worth more than £250

If you really paid what you said you did for it, you've been had mate!

Yes, I am THAT childish :( :)

Lol, I don't understand some people on eBay and why eBay are so oblivious to what goes on on there.

Re: Cwmcarn.
It's not a roadgap as such, more of a road drop. There's a left-hand berm, cross a fireroad and there's a "huge" drop, or you can take the right hand side of it and it's a bit tamer :)
I don't know if it was just me wearing the Full Face or the fact that I WAS actually faster, it sure has hell felt like I was pinning it down to the bottom. :D Have to keep at it and sort these jumps out though!

Ah, I thought you might be referring to that. Definitely not a roadgap, just a wee drop off after a fireroad.

Most likely because you were wearing a fullface giving you more confidence. Weirdly, Ive tested the drop/chicken line ... and the chicken line is faster. Reason is because you can bank off that berm, and then head straight over to the roots next to the tree on the left of the track and then straightline it through from there.

On a slightly more mundane note I just got hold of a Raleigh Eclipse folding bike for my sister to commute on. A mate was going to skip it so I got it off him for a few pints next time we're out.

Everything needs a bit of a tighten and the left pedal is missing but other than that it's in great condition!

clock or counter-clock there's 1 32/32 standing on the pedals hill for me, 2 hills each way both with 1 long spinner and 1 shorter stander. dunno about the bit coming from porchfeild up/down to the "down" that'll be pretty steep too.

the hill in the distance is the one from the road crossing near brook, prolly 15%'ish and about 400 metres long? the one we're on is longer from the road but less steep, about 10% most of the way then kicking up to 13-14% for about 200 metres.

Cool, cheers for that insight! Yeah, I think I'm binning the idea of a single, unless it's just for on-road duty. Going to borrow a bike for this event and see how I get on, what I want, what I need etc.

Yeah, the chicken line is definitely the fastest line since they did all that work on the bottom section and added that big berm..

I hadn't heard anything about a new middle section, hope it's good :)

I keep lurking and reading this thread to get clued up on MTBing. I'm sorry for all my annoying questions but...

1: How many of you guys built your own bikes up from components? Is it cheaper doing it this way would you say? I don't mind spending all of winter hand picking components cheap and building up from scratch on a budget. Anyone any experience of this?

2: How many of you guys run a 1x10 gear setup? So 1 middle ring and 10 rear cassette? I think I want to do this. Experimented with the trails I ride and I never use anything but the middle front one on my mate's hardtail that I borrow for now.

3: Is buying a second hand full suss for <£500 really that bad? :( I can't afford more but decided pretty much now I def want full sus for the riding I do.

4: Is there such a thing as a good time to buy seasonally where by bikes are cheaper? What about second hand stuff? Do the prices tend to go down in Winter? September seems to be when sales start right?

Oh yeah baby :D

I keep finding new and wonderful ways to make my bike heavier and more difficuilt to setup :D

1. Loads of us do. It's more expensive that way though ... just ask Hencore.
2. 2 of us that I know of
3. Yes
4. Usually at the end of the year when the new bike ranges come out and people stop riding their bikes in the winter

A "wee" drop off? Nahh... Don't have enough balls for it yet :(
i can understand that the chicken line is faster, if you were to take the drop-off then you'd struggle to get over to the left to take the next right hander properly, at least I would struggle :D

The middle section (immediately after the tunnel) is closed right down to about 20yards before the road gap, i mean drop :D I think they're just overhauling it to make it smoother and less deathly. Sign at the top of the DH states "a few weeks"... it looked ready to ride :)

600lb spring you must weigh a fair bit :D:D or is it the linkage multiplying it.

14 stone and 3:1 leverage ratio.

Got to go out now and need a friend to help me measure sag but from the ride up and down the road tf seemed to have done a decent job of getting it set in the ballpark for my weight, it feels extremely plush just pushing on the saddle and riding up/down curbs, but when seated and pedalling it moves past that sag and seems pretty steady, plenty of adjustment fun ahead though.

Amazing looking bike! I also love that shock...Cane Creek just ooze quality with all their products.
Tell me, what make of chain guide is that? Also like the bash ring. Is that a 1x10 setup?

Cheers

You'll find that it looks bigger than it is, purely because you cant see the landing on approach and all you see is the bottom of that hill. It really is small. For illustration purposes I showed a mate (who at the time didnt wanna do it) how easy it is, by literally rolling off it.
My front wheel was on the ground after the drop, while the back was still on the drop off itself. Though doing that was way scetchier than launching as far as you can :p I just wanted to show him that its near impossible to c*ck up.

I'm sure when they bought it, a few grand was probably the right price. It was one of Kleins top bikes, nowadays you could pick up an Apollo from Halfrauds with a more durable spec.

The bit I don't quite understand is that if it was only used once why all of the upgrades and surely if the kid didn't ask for it why spend so much if the first place (presuming they did).

I've just buttered the wife up (sorry, only metaphorically). Still can't walk properly after my minor off on Sunday and suggested to her that I'd be much safer on a full sus. bike.

Had to compromise a little and go for the frame only, decided on a 2011 Giant Anthem or Trance X as it'll take my 100mm Rebas without cocking up the geometry. Going to just swap everything else over from my current bike.
