having read both articles i cant find any reference to this gang being gypsies, have i missed it?

Some of the attitudes being openly aired in this thread are an absolute disgrace. Not a huge fan of the pikier version of gypsies but to openly express they should be wiped out is disgusting. For the record, Robbo, Gypsies are recognised under the Race Relations Act and your post takes racism to its top level.

Based on what I know about them, I don't think very highly of them. If you'd like to provide some light reading as to why they are generally lovely folk, please go right ahead.
It's not so much that I hate gypsies, it's more that I hate people who set up illegal caravan sites, run dodgy drive tarmac'ing or tree surgery business, engage in bare-knuckle fighting, steal, intimidate, are cruel to animals, don't pay tax, don't insure their vehicles. I've tried, but I just can't celebrate diversity to that extent.
nobody is asking you to celebrate them.
Dodgy drive tarmacing, tree surgery and businesses is at least trying to make a living by hard work. Unlike the sort of people who rely sole on state benefits and make no effort to work (plenty of whom are immigrants and come here for the benefits system)
The bare knuckle fighting is their way of sorting things out. They are no different to us with our drunken fisticuffs on a friday / saturday night in town. We're not exactly perfect are we ?
Cruelty to animals is largely down to ignorance. Most of them don't attend school for very long and can barely read or write. They don't want insiders around so will do it themselves. They don't have access to the drugs to do it humanely so try and do it the best way they can. Ignorance and a combination of skepticism of the rest of society, and a shyness from involving outsiders.
They don't pay tax because they rarely use any public services. They live in caravans, they will never get the police involved, and prefer to keep themselves to themselves. Granted i can think of some public services they will end up using, like the fire brigade. But they often get criticised because their camp sites are dirty. Largely down to their council not collecting their rubbish
If you look at our culture 150 years ago, its not that different to how the gypsys behave. A lot of their problems are that they have never moved on, whereas we have (for example with attitudes towards women)
We are of course, even then, only talking about a portion of travellers. Some of them live in legal caravan sites, run by the council for which they pay rent. They are provided with public services such as rubbish collection and are kept clean and tidy. They will attempt to run their businesses as best as possible and generally do little harm.

All done by many, many other members of the UK community too. As I said I am not a fan of the more ***** kind of gypsy but the racial intolerance in this thread was pretty **** poor.
And as for you defending your post Robbo. Any racial minority is going to be drawn into bad light when people from within their community do things wrong. It is the very fact that gypsy communities prefer to keep themselves to themselves that then makes it stand out when one of them commits crime.
Listen I am not some preaching ninny jumping on my high horse here. I am just commenting that the extreme nature of your post was really offensive.

If i came and set up a tent on your front lawn you'd be ok with that as I'm not using public services?
because no one should be living there and they're not paying council tax.

They aren't a race in the traditional sense though, I really don't think what I said was racist. It certainly wasn't meant to be.
They keep themselves to themselves and branch out when it suits them (usually for criminal activities), I'm sure they aren't all bad but they hardly seem to be decent folk, do they?
I'm pretty sure I didn't offend you, unless you are a gypsy yourself, in which case I may have touched a nerve.

Seriously? That's your contribution to the thread? I am sure you can tell that I am really intimidated....
You don't have to be part of the intended target to find something offensive. No I am not a gypsy and have in fact had my fair share of run-ins over the years with all the many things mentioned here. But you are advocating extermination of a race (and yes they are classed as a racial minority where you deem it to be the case or not).
And am I going to apologise for actually typing in this forum that I find someone's statement offensive? The hell I am.

granted i can think of a couple more services other than roads that they will use.
And even then we're making sweeping generalisations. Not all travellers drive vans that are uninsured and untaxed. The police have become so tough on them it would be hard to hold down their scrap metal business / landscaping business etc.. if their van kept getting seized and crushed.
Travellers will happily live on organised caravan parks if given one by the local council. problem is that locals frequently object to them and get them closed down. They've got to live somewhere.
These sorts of people are people that wouldn't be able to afford a house of their own, but rather than relying on the state and live in a council house and claim benefits, they prefer to work and live in a caravan within their means. Is that so deplorable ?
Since when does a lifestyle choice count as a race?
Almost the same idea though.
Firstly, I said 'wipe them out' in the sense of disbanding them and forcing them to live like normal people have to, not in mini-criminal gangs/families like they do.
I don't think all of them deserve to die, some of them might though, quite possibly. The same can be said for many things.
