Looking at getting hold of a NAS to work as a media source in the house.

The computer won't have a problem with the mkv files, but the xbox needs the divx stuff running from the pc to decode/stream the mkv stuff to the media center, BUT it'll play avi stuff using the usual file browser type media selector.

Problem being i've got a smegload of mkv rips on the pc. Can i rip the audio/video steams out of the mkv and remux them as a single avi?

There's a registry tweak to allow the 360 to play mkvs I've had issues with 1080p rips, Google is your friend.media browser is a handy plugin too much better library the MCE from experience.

You can tweak the registry on the 360? Different plugin ?

Any chance you could point me in the right direction

Check out MKVtoVOB its quick and works well.

Finally got around to this, file has converted to mpg quite happily, but the video player on the xbox doesn't see anything in the folder.

Confused.

edit, is there an mpg to avi converter out there that would work? Looked at Format Factory and it wants to chop the file down to 3gig (from 10) so i'm guessing it has odd presets for HD content.
