Change of career (at 30+)

Would you not be better diversifying?

Im on the same salary as you in placement doing software engineering so not all IT jobs are poor..

What do your sales guys do to justify making 150k-180k a year? I can't get my head around that much money for a sales job.

In 5-7 years if I'm earning 25k a year I'll think I've done reasonably well.

As for my attitude, well I'd rather not aim high and never achieve my goals. And I don't think earning 100k is a realistic goal. If it was, everybody would be earning 100k.

Probably sell a few million pounds worth of IT solutions I imagine, making the company a nice profit. Pay someone good 150k to make you a few million pounds in return.

They bring in big profits.

£100k is perfectly achievable. I think lots of people, if they put their minds to it could be taking home that sort of money by the time they're 35.

wish I had the kind of personality needed to do a sales job, everyone I know in a sales job (none IT btw) make good money, not 100k , but more than enough to be comfortable for life
not to be offensive but none of them are particularly clever, but they can 'talk the talk', have the 'gift of the gab' etc

Well thanks for the suggestion. My people skills aren't very good, so I don't think a career in sales is for me.

I have had two retail sales jobs with commission; commission I never earned as I was never good enough to meet the targets.

Again, thanks for the suggestion.

How about seeing a recruiter or careers advisor? Talk to them and they will help you address any weak areas you have (we all have them) and maximize your strengths. Might give you some direction. Anything else interest you besides your current IT field?

Well, I'm sure I could be interested in a lot of things if I had any exposure to them.

Truth is, I don't really know. Hence making the thread looking for some inspiration.

But I'd rather be well-paid than necessarily be interested in the work I was doing. Not that they're mutually exclusive, of course. Just a question of priorities.

Have you tried uni before? Mature students are eligible for student loans/grants/bursaries...

Even if I was eligible, which I'm not, I'd still be 35/36 upon graduating.

I'm in enough debt as it is without taking on more.

Just be another person with a degree though, Labour completely devalued them as they are just not rare any more.

What about one of the support trades, plumbing electrician etc

Or my personal favourite, bearing sea crab fisherman, upto $55k for 8 weeks work, slightly ;) risky and long hours, but will be known that you have balls the size of footballs if you can make it workout, those guys are just nutter tough.

*I'd be 35 by the time I completed it.

And? I completed my degree at 33, I'll be 35 when I finish the Masters I start in two months.

*I'd be £27,000 in debt at the very least. (I'm not eligible for any government loans)

Why are you not eligible for student loans?

If you can't go to a campus uni, why not do an OU degree? (I did).

Why are you not eligible for student loans?

Guys, please, I can't afford to go to uni. I'm not eligible for any loans/grants/bursaries. I know this for a fact. Please don't suggest it again.

I already have sizeable debts and do not wish to take out more loans to go to uni.

Never too late to do a degree, could do it part time or even full time as really I've been doing between 12 and 9 hours per semester which are only around 3 months long each and only 2 per academic year. We have a few people over 30 and 40 on my course who seem to be managing well even with families. I'm not 100% if you'd be able to get finance through the government like other students but can't imagine that you can't.

EDIT: Meh just read that you not eligible for student loans, that would put uni out.

would have course depend on what it is that you want to do and for all the stick university degrees get some of them really can open doors for you. Student loan debt isn't really that bad and from what I understand doesn't affect your ratings that much.

Saying the usual trades like electrician and gas engineers can still be prolific jobs but if you not paying for your own training expect to be shafted for a few years by whoever will be taking you on.

I haven't read past you opening post but I'm guessing that taking your IT training doesn't interest you?
