I only do what I like, it's not for other people as such and even if it was, there are as many people who like as don't.

The day I have to do something I don't like is the day it becomes a job and not a hobby and I probably won't do it.

As to that website it's easy to pick out poor pictures and **** them off, there are millions on Flickr and other sites. Normally I find the people with these attitudes can't actually produce anything better and in some cases much worse.

As to types of pictures i'm finding I take what ever takes my fancy and publish whatever I like, I don't mind if you don't like it or someone thinks having a camera doesn't make you a photographer.

I play golf, a 7 handicap, turn up at any golf course and you will see pepole with £1,000 worth of gear and can't hit the ball for toffee, doesn't not make them a golfer just not a good one, however they still enjoy their hobby and have a good time.

I have found photography much like golf, you have people with all the gear that suck, you have people with old gear that are great and then there are a mismatch of people that don't really care if they are good or bad just that they are having fun and some will have expensive stuff and some not, imo they seem to get the best deal. Then you have the pro's many who have the gear and the skills but don't actually get any fun out of doing it all. I am the I do what I like and enjoy doing it :)

Just to add I have no issue with people saying I don't like that shot or this shot and the reasons why, it's more the push against certain types of photography, it comes across as there is only 1 way to do things and if you don't do it you suck. Conform or die seems to be the attitude in some places.

That would all be well and good, except you've made the child look like a zombie and I can't see the fun in that...

You also can't group photographers like that, there's no way to group it.

At the absolute bottom end of gear you have people producing duds and claiming to be professionals, and people producing amazing shots as their hobby.
At the mid-range gear level, you have people producing duds and claiming to be professionals, and people producing amazing shots as their hobby.
At the top-end of gear, you have people producing duds and claiming to be professionals, and people producing amazing shots as their hobby.

You get my point?

Selective colouring is an almost clicheed mark of someone brand new to their editing program or camera and playing around with settings, and doing it on shots of children is almost as common a hallmark, particularly when taking all the life out of the subject and taking the attention off of it.

As long as you're enjoying it then more power to you; I was only joking really as your shot isn't horrible, it's just so very close to the examples so often posted on that site that I kind of had to link it. :)
 
Well the group of pictures were actually just shots of the day rather than a grouping of shots all in the same vein.

I group my stuff on flickr but not on here, I mean I didn't, once again realise they had to be grouped in a way that you enjoyed to make the photos enjoyable or seem better.

Now the zombie quote is better as tbh I never saw it like that but now you mention it is true, however my wife loved the photo and Aidan is the apple of her eye, so in that respect it really does work even if you don't like it.

That is the difference between just posting a crappy link (all those photos are from real businesses by the way not hobbists) and making an offish comment. Most people will take constructive feedback in the right way (well I do) (even if it's not in the rate this photo thread) and look at how to improve or make things better.

I agree it's not as good as a standard portrait but I also take loads of those, I mean it's not as if every shot I take is single colour, it's just another form that I enjoy using along with HDR (sure some are way over the top but hey I like them also :D)
 
Personally I don't mind selective colouring, however I only really do it when I feel it's needed like this:

In reemul's shot I don't really like the lack of colour on the subject for the same reason as Ksanti. Maybe if it was all in B&W it would look better? Like you said, it's fine as long as you're happy with the shot!
