12am or 12pm?

ante meridiem (a.m., English: "before midday") and post meridiem (p.m., English: "after midday")

I think of it like this, what is 12:01 am closer to?

This, if you look up the definition of am and pm, know what they mean, then clearly noon has to be pm, if it's before noon it's 11:59:59.someit.

It stops being after noon when a new day starts - 12am.

Sounds like you should report your colleagues to the 'Morons' thread. I'm pretty sure I learnt that in nursery school. Definately no poll necessary.

Maybe so but 1200 hours is still 1200 so some buffoon will always ask "is that AM or PM?"

I suppose "hrs" could always be put after, which nominate it as a 24 hour clock.

But I've always considered time written without a : in the middle is a 24 hour clock anyway.

Also, why the name change?

There are buffoons out there that don't know hrs denotes a 24hour clock :p That's what I meant!

Name return, not change.
