have i exhausted all my options to get good internet?

sorry. it's quite belated and i'm not very good at this. it also came out really big but here it is:

the connection on the far left is for my broadband. i have also since had numerous line checks, all of which returend the same verdict - that there is no fault on my line.

Have they sent a BT engineer to site? Unless they have the checks are meaningless. BT's policy is to reject the fault unless you force them to do otherwise. Downside is they'll threaten you with a £80 engineer charge if they still find no fault. A decent ISP will argue the case with them on that for you though.

You need to post the router stats though, at that distance you can get better unless you have really funky cable routes to the exchange. Main options are dodgy line, dodgy router, dodgy internal wiring (it doesn't look great I have to say but that's rarely a decent guide)

i rang up asking to try and get a bt engineer out, and they told me that because of their online checks they weren't able to authorise a trip. i guess i can try again and hope i get someone who doesn't hate their job quite as much as that person did!

indeed the dell has seen better days - fortunately i don't have to call on it anymore :p

edit: virign offers the same 'rough' speeds as all the others do. i'm with talk talk and they tell me i should be getting between 1.5 and 3mb. it's not great but it's a damn site better than the half mb i get. it was the same when i was with sky before though.

There are new satellite services out now, operating in the Ka band. They should give a reliable 10 Mb/s down / 4Mb up. if you can afford it.
Usage limits aren't great and satellite was never good for gaming, but generally it should be better than what you are getting currently. As I understand it you can go over your usage limit, but your speeds are no longer guaranteed as you are sharing the spare capacity with other people who have gone over their limits.

I'd be looking at changing that nte5 for a better integrated filter...adslnation do a much better one. To do a better diagnosis we need the router stats...this thread is kinda meaningless without them, please tell me the router model etc. and I will tell you how to get the stats...

about the first bit - how do i go about that? i wouldn't trust myself to be installing things like that. i've also spent about 2 and a half hours on the phone this morning to both bt and talk talk trying to have an engineer to come out and take a look. but to no avail :rolleyes:

maybe you guys know of high quality 3rd party companies who will perform thorough line checks and broadband assistance?

there are 2 screws on the front, unscrew, pull off faceplate and then replace the bottom half with the supplied filter....job done. Also, try unscrewing the plate, taking it off and putting the broadband filter directly into the socket that's present there....and see if that improves things.

to logon use your broswer and type in the following in the address bar

the username should be admin
the password should be password

then there should be a section to give your router stats...under maintenance if I remember correctly
