Yeah it is a little crazy how much he gets. If you have a look at the stats page on minecraft.net you can see how many copies have been sold in the past 24 hours, taking into consideration of course what they cost.

Just purchased, just left it on the default payment which i believe was $1 more than average.
Activated through Steam, payed through Amazon. Very easy transaction and service. I will have to keep an eye out for more deals like this.
