I eat meat but at the same time am uneasy about abbatoirs but in my mind as long as the creatures are put down humanely and with minimal suffering i can live with being a meat consumer.

I have gone so far as to watch documentaries involving the slaughter process where every effort was made to make the process as stress free as possible for the animals.

Unfortunatley just heard this news about a local abbatoir :(

**warning video in the report contains distressing images**

I have personally visited this abbatoir based in brentwood essex (through my job) it is one of the largest pig slaughtering facilities in the uk with some of the animals travelling the length of the uk. They supply many of the supermarkets.

Utterly disgraceful :(

Animal abuse is quiet distasteful, and I'd be concerned about the mental state of the abusers (would they think twice about back handing their wives/children?) as they enjoy doing it for some bizarre reason. For every tasty piece of meat something has to suffer. Mmmm... picking up some awesome pork and leek sausages this afternoon

Yeah it's shocking, my mate worked in a pig abbatoir near cambridge when he was looking for work to tide him over, rather than claim the dole. As he said to me the people that work in this places slaughtering animals are near sub human levels of intelligence, yet they are left to slaughter these pigs. People that bleed a pig into their boots to warm their feet up.

He told me some awful stuff about walking into meat lockers to find someone taking a wee up the carcasses because they couldn't be bothered to go to the toilet and get re-dressed/cleaned.

Disgusting, how would they like treatment like that.

really dont know how people can be so pathetically low and despicable :(

Pigs are stubborn, you'll know that when you've worked with them.

What else are you supposed to do with a pig that has gone off it's legs (as that one had in the video) ?? Drag it a few metres into the slaughter room or shoot it and bin the carcass?

I don't agree with trying to stub out cigarettes, or punching a pig. The men who worked in that room stunning the animals with the electric paddles should have been sacked though, you need to get that right. Or the pig is still concious when you're slitting its throat.

I work with pigs on a daily basis, and usually end up having to load around 130 each week that go straight to slaughter.

Interestingly one of the comments on that article claims the 2001 Foot & Mouth outbreak started at Cheale Meats too, which a quick Google seems to confirm.

Smoke? Fire?

It didn't start there, it would have started on a farm somewhere along the supply chain. It was first spotted at Cheale Meats at a guess.

What's more pathetic is the argument that the footage was obtained unlawfully so cannot be used for convictions.. who decided trespassing laws take priority over animal cruelty laws?

It is down to individuals but ultimately the company are to blame. Hopefully this may pave the way for tighter regulation maybe cctv in the slaughtering areas of abbatoirs which can be reviewed.

So far the companies solicitors are denying it is even their premises albeit 2 of their employees have had their licences revoked.

On a seperate issue cheale meats was the source of the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001.

Fair point,

but the principle behind the matter remains,

say your caring for a disabled human being? or someone with mental difficulties?
you wouldn't smack them with a bat for being awkward or stub a fag out in their face........

Recent panorama undercover care home footage got winterbourne view shut down.

Although many animal cruelty cases like this fail in court by their nature i.e. no witnesses/ evidence is processed on site. I hope Cheale Meats are made an example of.

answer : not beat it with a lump of wood in the first place

Fag in the face is out of order, I've already said that. It's completely unjustifyable.

Yes, the lump of wood is far too rough, the rest I mentioned the pig that was 'Off its legs' is that the Video mentions something about it being seriously injured, as though the blokes in the video caused that.

Pigs just go off their legs sometimes as they're big heavy things, they get adlib food and water and grow too quick!

literally can't watch **** like that

Sorry i will put a warning on my opening post about the video.

As a rule i wont watch animal cruelty video but i forced myself to watch the video as i have a work connection with this place. Saw enough a third of the way through. Apparantly they have far worse footage which they could not publicly broadcast :(

What is this crap about how it cannot be used to prosecute because the cameras were installed without permission? Who cares where the footage came from? Why does it even matter?

so you should drag it by its ears?

wasn't getting at you mate, I'm just hopeless with animal cruelty, I can barely watch the old guys dog with the knackered back legs on Family Guy :p

I think it's time we artificially grow our meat so there's no brain or nervous system to suffer, it will be more efficient, cleaner and better for the environment.
