Well guys, the time has come to end my career in a call centre and look at the bigger picture.

You have to take big steps in life to get anywhere, so over the last few months I've been setting the wheels in motion to break out of the endless shift-cycle that is office work and do my own thing.

It's a bit of a big move, so I may be a little less present on than previous. Handed in my notice today at my current employer.

I'm going into computer refurbishing/recycling/resale. :)

Partly inspired by DiamondMark, I have to say. The man may come on here wasted, but he talks some sense. :p

Wish me luck GD!

Just how he always insisted that you need to close your eyes and take a risk sometimes, it was about 6 months ago but it stuck in my head.

It's time to see if it'll work. Have to work notice, so could be a few weeks until I know if I've just committed financial suicide. :p

I've always thought that this would be quite a lucrative market. The amount of IT stuff that companies throw out is crazy, but 90% of it still works fine. There are always people on smaller budgets who would kill for some of that stuff. Given the cost of WEEE recycling, businesses would probably be happy to give you their junk.

Good luck with it! If I was made redundant tomorrow, I might be doing the same thing!

Another place you could look for thrown out machines would be high schools or collages. My school has been throwing out PCs all year which, while not exactly blisteringly fast systems, have Core2Duos in them which depending on which Core2Duo it is could be worth a bit if you recycle them.

Good luck :).

Whilst you have to take risks to get rewards in life, taking risks alone is very different to taking risks when you have the responsibility to provide for a child. I hope you've got a fully costed business plan, market research completed etc etc - because it isn't a market which lends itself to get-rich-quick ideas.

However, if you do it, I wish you all the best :)

See if you can get in touch with the Military, they are disposing of loads of kit very shortly.

Very very very doubtful you will due to security reasons but meh, may be worth a try.

Pretty brave to leave full-time employment at a time in which a lot of people are finding it increasingly harder to get employment! Echo the comments regarding market research etc, although I guess anyone going out on their own would certainly have done this before starting.

Keep us updated with your progress. Good luck. :)

All the best Matty - and I hear what you're saying about DiamondMark :p

Personally - my story is a bit different as I've fairly recently left the world of IT employment for a much more physical, strenuous and far less stressful job.

The main idea is the same though, granted I'm not self employed but I wish you good luck in your new venture :D
