Will the gtx 570 beat the amd cards easily? I've read some reviews but I just want to confirm. If it's true then I'll probably have to switch to the nvidia bandwagon.

1980x1024 res. the 570 retails around £230 elsewhere and the 6950 is around the same price so clearly is better value. but i haven't used nvidia cads before so im really not sure how they perform.

I own a GTX580, but am building a PC for someone, i have been in a fortunate position to have a EVGA GTX570 HD SC to play with.

The report states that they managed to overclock their 570 to a core of 800, the EVGA 570 comes factory clocked @ 797, i have had a little play with the card and have so far managed to extract a core of 890Mhz on air, my target is 900Mhz

When i get home from work ill post up the 3D Mark11 and Heaven benchmarks, which are quite impressive for a card that is priced so much lower than a 580.

I am really impressed with the GTX570, but at the end of the day its YOUR decision.

Regards

Pretty sure that's wrong, at least regarding the 6970.
At 1920 res or below the GTX570 beat both the 6950/6970, except for few games which AMD heavily optimised the 6950/6970 for, such as Shogun 2, Crysis and Metro2033. However, the GTX570 has greater overclocking headroom, whereas the 6950/6970 has more VRAM, which does have a little bit of impact on frame rate (0-3fps) even at 1920 res.

But generally speaking, the GTX570 have more grunt than then 6950/6970, if we disregarding optimisation for games.

6970 faster but then not by much like few % , 570 edges in few games and 570 is much cheaper so i would go with 570 at this moment and time.

6970 is not really faster than GTX570...it is faster than it in games like Crysis and Metro2033 because it was clearly heavily optimised for them. If you look at more recent games like Crysis 2 and Witcher 2, the GTX570 has a VERY clear lead over the 6970 at 1920 res:

Crysis 2 (with HQ Textures and dx11):

Once you overclock them they all pretty much even out give or take less than 10% so not really anything in it performance wise.

If you're using more than 3 monitors then go with the 6950/6970 option or working at higher res's. If you're using a 1920 monitor or 1080p then go with the gtx 570 but try and go for a card that doesn't have a stock cooler.

Also you'll probably have less driver issues with Nvidia although these days AMD drivers are pretty solid too.

Going back to your originally question the answer would seem to be "no the GTX 570 won't beat the AMD cards easily".

The very mixed response you've had shows it's a close run thing depending on the particular game, resolution played at etc.

GTX570 ~ HD6970.

The HD6950 is more of a GTX560Ti competitor.

This.

Given the choice I would still opt for the 570, though it will be closer than with the 6950. However, if at any point you choose to run very high resolutions then I would think a little more about trying the 6970. Time then for lots of benchmark comparisons.

GTX570 ~ HD6970.
This, but technically, a single 570 can't go any higher than 2560x1600, where as a single 6970 wins every single game from there on up.

Is it worth noting that all Radeon HD 6970 graphics cards can support a max resolution of 2560x1600 on up to three monitors?

The problem is that the 6970 would also struggle in those situations not because of lack of memory but because it wouldn't have the sheer performance to drive those settings smoothly. So the 6970 might be better than the GTX570 at higher resolutions but it doesn't mean it will be able to play those games smoothly.
