Lack of fathers root cause of violence

errr well of course single parents are more likely to separate, 100% more likely, as they already have broken up (or gotten divorced, or one has died) that's how they've become single parents

Unmarried parents are single (well they are not married are they?)

Tefal, my post was because people were going on about Married couples making better parents and crap.

Think the whole thread has gone to pot to be honest though. ;)

Yes, but you need to look at the long term picture.

Is there some correlation between marriage and long term planning?

:D

well no but clearly there is a link between the historic supporters of marriage and corupt tax law.

More readily fixed by correcting the error in the tax law than making more people get married considering our shockingly high divorce rate.

Or alternatively, that, again from a population of similar makeup, the children of married parents are more likely to do well, less likely to be criminals and so on, compared to children of unmarried parents or single parents. This does not, in any way, mean that individual families, parents, children etc all fall into the average position.

But is it actually the unmarriedness that causes the kids to go off the rails?

What if the actual cause for undisciplined kids also is a catalyst for relationships failing and crappy commitment values?

So the real issues causes bad kids and no marriage, rather than no marriage causing bad kids.

Was speaking to one of my cousins on the weekend who is a midwife, and as part of her job she was to often ask quite probing questions about weather the baby was planned, use of contraception etc. According to their statistics at her hospital 60% of pregnancies are unplanned .

Really makes you think how many of these children are actually cared for in the way they should be, or if their parents just see them as another way to get benefits.

I would be in support of the abolition of inheritance tax.

"According to the latest British Social Attitudes (BSA) Survey, which was conducted in 2008, almost two-thirds of people now see little difference between marriage and living together. Fewer than a fifth of people took issue with it." BBC March 2011
Guardian columnist Zoe Williams has been with her partner for six years and has two children ....

"Having kids is a much bigger deal than marriage, a much bigger statement of commitment. Personally, I just don't think about getting married. I simply have never felt a need to be married."

... 53% of people now think a wedding is more about a celebration than a life-long commitment.

I think more and more people are waking up to the fact that marriage is a money making scheme aimed at those who feel they need a bit of paper to prove they are committed or those who need immigration rights or a UK passport.

I think you would need to go a lot more in depth to make any sense of the statistics been thrown about. Suffice to say marriage is on the decline (it does still have religious connotations for many people) and there's just as much scum in the world as there ever has been.
