is it worth it

For free? Yes.

For money? No.

Old to old would be pointless at this stage, 4870x2 are hot and a lot of them are breaking now so I would not buy one now.

Just either wait it out for 28nm cards if your GTX280 is enough for the moment or just buy a GTX560ti or AMD 6950.
 
All I can say is that most people I've read about when they have made a jump from a 280 / 285 have said it wasn't worth it. If you can try before you buy I'd personally suggest doing that. I liked mine though I didn't upgrade from the same card as you might.
 
would cost me about £30 once i sold my card

looking at the benchies its a lot better that a 280

also the 4870x2 has a few months warranty on it
 
Are you able to try it out first, even if only for a few hours? If not then I'd say yeah, it's worth £30, especially if you like AMD games like Stalker.
 
ouch. hopefully things work out buddy.

The 285 isn't a bad card. Drivers are rock solid so I'm sure you'll be able to tolerate it for a couple of months.
