Ban the grammar and spelling nazi's!

I have to admit that "should/could have" makes me cringe, even though I know the derivation. It is, again, people writing what they hear. "Should've" is very common in speech (but should never be used in writing) and, of course, is an abbreviation of "should have," with a correctly used, omissive apostrophe.

The above paragraph sounds extremely pompous and it is. These petty spelling/grammatical/linguistic annoyances may bother me slightly, but arguing over them in a public forum is totally pointless.

As an aside, I have noticed that my spelling and grammar are certainly deteriorating with age. I'm "only" 48, but there are certain words that make me stop and think these days. Literacy is an acquired skill and, like any other skill, needs to be excercised regularly. I needs moar readingz.

I remember a time, about 10-15 years ago, when most text written by people (mostly gamers, I might add) was all basically txt spk. Perhaps not as bad as the "yoof" are doing it now, but still.

For me, I used to type using shortened words - u for you, 2 for two, l8r for later, etc etc. I used to post on forums in the same way. So did most people I knew.

I typed like that because I mostly played fast paced FPS games (Unreal, UT, Q1/2/3) and text chat was the name of the game. In doing this I learnt to be quick at typing and fairly accurate as well (even though it was mild txt spk I was writing).

The essence was speed, and you couldn't spend 30 seconds typing an essay when you are in an online game. So you adapted. Kind of why text speak came about on mobile phones pre predictive text/full KB layouts etc. It was quicker to get your point across.

People type like that (face book/ my space etc) because it's quicker for them to get across what they want to say.

I learnt to become quite quick on the keyboard, and eventually picked up touch typing just by "doing" (and racking up 20k+ posts on several forums :o). Now, typing something that looks more or less normal (my spelling and grammar is still ****, but I try - don't hate me, bro!) is just as quick as reverting back to the txt spk I used back in "the day".

Personally, I don't care how people type in forums. As long as it is not completely txt spk ********, i don't care. If someone wants to post without using absolute correct grammar, I don't hate them for it. If someone abbreviates a word or two, I don't care. If someone posts in all lower case (I used to do this a LOT back in the day), then so be it.

There is only one rule and one rule only for me...

PARAGRAPHS!!

As long as long posts are broken up by way of paragraphing, then I don't much care how it is laid out/spelling/grammar etc. A wall of text - even with perfect spelling/grammar/punctuation, is bloody difficult and brings on my old-man migranes again.

Oh, just to add...

The "there/their/they're", "brake/break", should have instead of should have etc. These should be followed. At all times.

What kind of retard doesn't know the correct word to use? I remember learning that in primary school. I was 10 FFS!!!!

Probably the same type of retard who thinks "At all times." is a complete sentence. :p

I Agree. If you don't use the ability you'll lose it. I think my grammar has deteriorated considerably in the last ten years or so, which is about the same length of time I've owned a PC. I've not read a book for over ten years now, which could go some way to explain how poor my grammar is nowadays.
