Thailand or Japan for a holiday

Hehe, I'd definately say Japan over Thailand. Even before I became interested in some of the asian media; I'd always wanted to go from seeing things like the gadgets programmes when I've been a kid.
Japan is definately near the top of my list of places I'd like to go before I hit 30 and would be getting to the point of likely having other bigger commitments.

Just wish I had the money! Not sure I'd want to go by myself though :)

yeh Id much prefer to go with someone but that is unlikely.

I have 1 friend how is in OZzy land just now who is interested but that depends if he can save enough.

I have just spent £570 on my flight to Thailand after years and years of saying I will go "yeah I will do it soon" etc.. I have just done it.

3rd Jan until 30th! No going back now can't wait :D

With the cheapness of airasia.com flights its daft to stay in one place when over there!

I know tbh it would be mad but Id liek to visit loadsa place in Asia

Japan
Vietnam
Cambodia
Thailand
China
Hong Kong
South Korea

Maybe Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia also

But cities I wanna see for sure:

Tokyo
Beijing
Shanghai

Though doing it alone would be kinda crap.

If it's any help I found renting a house cheaper than a hotel room, though there are 3 of us going. This is in Tokyo by the way, all booked for late May, should be a good time to go. :) Now to find some good flights!

Japan and Thailand are really really different. Both are very interesting, if you just want to lay on a beach go to Tenerife or something - but if you want to see a very different culture then it's a hard choice.

Thailand is much more raw, so long as you get off the package tourist trail anyway - some fantastic architecture and places to see; Japan is the opposite - it makes the UK look like the third world, but still has really odd pockets of tradition.

Both countries are completely alien, Japan is wierder IMO.

(Edit: Spent a month or so in Thailand, lived in Fukuoka for 2 years)

I am going alone yes and have a list of places I want to see some from the Lonely planet travel guide others I have found from travelfish and a bit of searching.

I went with Thailand as it seems the #1 destination for first time travellers, its pretty cheap a lot of things to see, relatively safe so easy for you to get ya teeth in to.

It's a good choice, i'd suggest some time in Bangkok then get the train up to Chang Mai.

Then south for the beahces?

Thats whats cool about thailand...you have Bangkok in the middle then NOrth smaller towns, history, tribes, forests? etc..

Then South to beaches and jungle

With in country travel very cheap you can do all 3.

I think Japan is more ''same-same'' and more expensive to travel about?

As a tourist you can get a really good deal on a rail pass. The north is beautiful, almost alpine. The east has all of the big *Akira* style (MEGA) cities. The west is very traditional and where I lived (Kyushu) is much more laid back, sub tropical and volcanic. Shikoku is really really nice, under-inhabited and a lot of traditional guest houses and nature.

If you want some time on the beach, it's a short hop to Malaysia. Penang is very nice.

Another thing Im thinking is going alone will be crap.

I mean wandering about Japan on my own lol..it just seems mad....At least Thailand is kinda a tosursit/backpacker/party place.

Especially many Japs dont speak English. What if I get lost, kidnapped or murdered lol..I think it would get dull being alone walking about all the sites.

I dunno?

I have been looking into it for a while so have this so far

Bangkok - wat pho reclining buddha
- Grand Palace
- Nat Museum
- Weekend market

Chiang Mai - doi pui national park
- wat suan dok
- Chiang mai zoo
- Night market
- Catch some muay thai

Chiang Rai - White temple
- Motorbikes + mountains

kho phi phi
koh phanan
Khao Sok National Park

few other places yet to be added.

Sorry to hijack your thread but thought might give you some insight on things to see and do

*edit*

After speaking to someone who has been to Thailand a few times she said its hard to really get lost as such because there are a fair few people there travelling so its easy to find others and a lot of people will just come up to you if they see you on your own so even though you go on your own you don't stay on your own.

Also I am considering doing a few tours of places so there will be groups of people.
The Thais are also very friendly (not saying Japan isn't) but they by all accounts talk to you as well and are interested in you.

Although few Japs speak good English, they are always very helpful. Its surprisingly easy to find your way around Japan.
If I was looking at a map I often got people asking if I needed help/directions.
