I want to downgrade my rig in my signature to something smaller and newer. I'm looking to base it around an i5 2500k. I've got around £500 to spend on the following:

Processor
Motherboard
Ram
Case
Cooler

I'll be selling the above from my current rig and keeping all other parts. So i'm looking for any suggestions as to what parts will be best. It'll be used mainly for sixth form work but i'll be gaming sometimes and other stuff.

Somethings are easy to suggest such as a Gen3 motherboard that will have PCI-E3.0 support with intels Ivybridge CPU's released next year.

Ram, well thats either 4GB or 8GB.

Processor, well the i5 2500K as you said.

So,

But really the case choice is up to you.

Or the cooler can be say a Antec kuhler 620/920 etc for a simple closed loop system.

That looks good, thanks, I'll probably upgrade again next year when the upcoming intel stuff is out, it's just this machine I have now is overkill for what I need for the moment.

as i said on the other thread about the OP downgrading their GTX580 to a GTX470 for 720p use.

its better to have it and not need it than need it and not having it.

just upgrade next year when Ivybridge comes out.

can't really see how "downgrading" is going from what you have to a 2500K etc ?

to me downgrading normally means going from being someone who games a lot or does a lot of video editing to someone that might play the occasional game/edit the odd video here and there, so you can get away with less processor power/memory/disk storage/high end graphics card.

i'd just keep the kit you have and drop it in a smaller case.

it's just this machine I have now is overkill for what I need for the moment.

if thats what you think with your current kit then it won't change when you go with a 2500K and z58 mobo.
