A&F don't like the Jersey Shore image

"We are deeply concerned that Mr Sorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image," the company said in a statement.

...believe this association is contrary to the [aspirational natureof our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans."

Really? Are they that feeble? Next time I see somebody wearing an A&F garment, I am going to point and laugh.

People buy into brand and image, without that these big companies are nothing.

Take for example the famous Ratner speech

During the speech, he commented:
“ We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap" ”

He compounded this by going on to remark that some of the earrings were "cheaper than an M&S prawn sandwich but probably wouldn't last as long". After the speech, the value of the Ratners' group plummeted by around £500 million, which very nearly resulted in the firm's collapse. Ratner resigned in November 1992 and the group changed its name to Signet Group in September 1993.

Today, Ratner's speech is still famous in the corporate world as an example of the value of branding and image over quality
.

And I do find the OP hilarious :D

I did think it weird that a grown adult male was wearing the same yellow A&F sweat pants I was wearing in my teens at Uni

The Situation does own though.

Oh I understand that! But are the wearers of A&F so shallow and vacuous? *mock shock*

Everyone is to an extent.

Back in the day Rover took a hit on sales thanks to Alan Partridge driving a Rover 800 Vitesse.

Brand image is important - even more so to companies like A&F who rely almost entirely on brand image alone.

I don't think the A&F significant damage aspect from Jersey Shore would be as bad as every time they have been/were accused (and continue to be sued because) of not employing black/mexican people to work out front in their blue eyed blonde haired good old boy Americana stores.
