Best card for Dell U2711

At least 2GB vram per GPU recommended.

6950 2GB x 2
6990 + 6970
580 3GB x 3

So 2x 2Gb 6950's are on par with 3x 3Gb 580's ?
I would take 2x 580's over 2x 6950's any day of the week :P anyway back on topic, for that res i would personally choose 2x 3Gb 580's myself.

The reviews I have read show that the 3gb one isn't worth it, even at high resolutions over the 1.5gb, 2 3gbs is mega money!! Would I need any aa at that res?

Yeah was planning on a 3gb one, but then read some reviews and it was only a few fps ahead...... What about a motherboard and ram?

It depends on the games you play. For games like Metro 2033 or Shogun 2, it won't be just a few fps ahead.

What graphics card do you currently have? if its a recent one and you can hold off for a bit the new graphics card are due out.

motherboard wise I've been looking at the asus p8p67 pro or the p8z68 v pro, 8gb 1600 cas9 is under £50.

You should specify the budget. I would recommend:

CPU: i5 2500K (hopefully able to reach 4.5GHz stable, if not 5GHz stable)
RAM: 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600C7 or faster
Mobo: any P67/Z68-like mobo with reasonable PCI-E spacing for dual graphics cards (preferably with NF200 if TRI-CF?)
GPU: you'll need SLI/CF for your resolution. Plz refer to post #4 of this thread.

No you don't. I can switch off sli and most bar the extreme, games are still fine. Keeping smooth frame rates with high aa and max settings is where the second comes in handy.

Unless everyone spends all their time playing metro 2033.
