Hi guys,

I bought an MSI 6970 about two months ago with the aim of putting another one in XFire just before Rage came out - now it seems that they are either as rare as the proverbial rocking horse drops, or seriously overpriced compared to what I paid (£249.99 iirc from the lovely ginger chap at OcUK who was fantastically helpful might I add!)

I've just noticed that the price of 6950's is pretty good - would adding one of these cards make the 6970 purchase a bit pointless? I suppose I could try selling the 6970 on ebay and some miners may grab it but is it worth it? If I clocked up the 6950 (and got the 2gb model) would I still get most of my 6970s worth out of the setup?

Thanks for any info in advance!

Yes, pairing a 6950 with a 6970 would work fine, as far as I know crossfire wont downclock the faster of the two cards, so performance won't be restricted by the slower 6950. There also fine cards for OC'ing hitting 850/1300 on stock voltage is more than do-able.

The one thing I would suggest if you get a 6950, try get one with a non-reference cooler (TFIII,DCUII etc..) as they can be pretty damn noisy once that fan gets past 65-70%

Didn't realise that the 6970 would be working at full speed - thought it throttled back to a 6950?! Interesting!!

I can't believe the current price of the 6970s, a 6950 would be great! Need a bigger PSU though, pretty sure my corsair 750W will be struggling!

Possibly touch and go. I'd try it before replacing the psu.

all of the 6990/6970 are up in price due to bitcoin mining and retailers are caching in on this, you may notice that the average cost of a 6950 is up also. I pretty much refuse to pay for them on those grounds and at those prices when they should be about £50 lower in my opinion but I guess that's all supply and demand. if im paying the prices they are asking at the moment ill be wanting a 7 series card

I don't really get the bitcoin mining seeing as it has now got to the point where the encryption is so difficult to break the time to mine a single "bit" is ludicrous vs the cash return.

It will fail, and I hope it does - not being bitter but I looked into it quite a lot and it's so flawed.

In the long term it is flawed unless they make changes to it, if thats even possible.
