I've not touched games since the mid 90s when I bought the occasional PC game, the likes of rise of the triad, doom, warcraft, command and conquer, and even duke nukem! But for some reason I had the urge to play a game this weekend and drove myself down to the local game shop to buy an xbox 360 and halo 2.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting this is to say I'm not getting on with Halo - It's far from rekindled my love for gaming - So, I'm after some suggestions as to where to pick back up :)

How about Red Dead redemption, GTA4, Batman AA? The main difference between games in the mid-90s and now is that now you can't die:o well you can die but it only lasts a few seconds.

Is there any particular genre you'd like to try?

I whole-heartedly recommend the Mass Effect games, they're a cross between an RPG and an FPS and have brilliant stories, the first can be a little slow to get into but if you persevere it's well worth it.

Do you like driving games? If so Forza 3 will be cheap as the fourth is due out in about a month.

As mentioned you can't go wrong with Red Dead Redemption for an open-world sandbox title and you can sink hours into it!

I'd also say give Batman AA a go, it was a great game and even people who didn't expect to like it, actually liked it.

Because I feel like making an analogy today, OP basically reads as:

10 years ago I enjoyed the finest wines the planet had ever known. For some reason I decided to become a heretic, alas I am now born again and went down to my local Aldi and purchased Lambrini.

Exactly this, I have never liked batman, or any superhero related media. Arkham Asylum was the exception though, such a great game. It doesn't really do anything new, but it is very well made with great combat, visuals and gameplay.

Red Dead Redemption is also just as good, and if you like the wild west setting it's even better than Arkham.

You could also try Deadly Premonition, a totally off the wall japanese take on Twin Peaks. It's full of flaws, graphics and controls but the quirky story and characters makes up for everything. It's everything Alan Wake tried to be but failed.

try some XBLA titles!
All the double fine games (Stacking, Costume quest and Iron brigade when it comes out!!!!!!)

Twisted pixel did some good titles (Splosion man, Comic jumper)

other really good titles are things like Limbo, Toy soilders, From dust, Trials HD and Peggle

You missed... Shadow Complex.

That's because Halo is a bad game.

The difference between 90s gaming and now is that creativity went down the toilet about 5-10 years ago.

what creatively going down the toilet with the likes of GTA IV and red dead redemption the worlds alone these games are set in are awe inspiring in everyway, and dont get me wrong i love games of old i still dig out my amiga every now and again. Also Bioshock is like nothing else anyone has seen thats an awesome game. As for the original post Halo 2 wasnt there best halo of the series, Original Halo was much better and the new one reach is good also. Did you get the xbox 360 or original maybe you would feel more comfortable on the pc again

For the OP, since you've got the Xbox 360, depending on what games you are wanting to play
Racer: Project Gotham Racing 4 or Forza 3
Shooting: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1 (still the best post ww2 COD imo), Gears of War 1/2
RPG: Mass Effect series, Elder Scrolls Oblivion (unless you have a pc then get it on that)

Then you've got the games mentioned above such as Batman AA and GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption, all of the above are great games to play and should help rekindle that love you've lost ;)

Alan Wake has certainly got better controls and graphics because of the higher production cost, but the story is like a third rate King short story. It tried to be scary and weird but failed miserably. Deadly Premonition had weirdness in abundance, charm and great characters. It was a great homage to one of the best tv series ever made, Twin Peaks

strongly disagree, regardless I wouldn't consider it a decent gateway into modern console gaming.

I really liked Alan Wake. The only thing that spoiled it for me was that even though the characters were great, well above average, I'd finished Heavy Rain the year before which beats it hands down in that dept.

Why does everyone rave over Batman AA? Been playing it on pc rather slowly and quite frankly the acting in it is superb but it's not gripping me. Dunno why.

As for games to get on xbox. Well put it this way, people have gone to jail for lesser crimes than not owning masseffect. Mass effect 2 is even better than the original in my opinion as it takes out a lot of the things you may have found annoying in the orginal. Having said that I played ME2 on pc and pc also corrects some of the xboxs flaws like load times for one.
