Hey guys,

I've overclocked my CPU to 4.2GHZ atm and im getting max temps of 70 with an a50 cooler at 100% load.

I'm using core temp and every so often it shows that one of my cores rises to 98C for a second!! I'm worried.

Any advice please.

70 should be ok but check with an expert overclocker, 90 would be way too high for my liking. Check for a better cpu cooling fan or push pull scenario, make sure to have adequate case cooling, take the side panel off your case in warmer ambient temperatures.

what is the cpu voltage? might be able to lower it and still get 4.2ghz stable, this will then mean reduced temps.

try download hwmonitor and use that for temps, do you still see this 98C for a second?

Was you gaming or something then?, how did you check the core temp temperatures outside of gaming, do you use two monitors and have one showing temperature software?.

Something would be wrong and you would risk cpu damage in the short term i would think if these temps are at idle.

at 100% load.
What was you running at that load?.

I was running Prime95, so the cores were at 100% load. Also I only get 98C for a split second then it goes back down to 60C odd. It also does it every so often.

what is the cpu voltage??

download cpuid cpu-z and it will show you there, aswell as showing you in hwmonitor.

maybe that's throttling back to protect cpu?, i'm no expert but 70-75C would be my personal target, probably not dooable on standard water cooling kits?, nice overclock though.

Maybe someone here with more clout on overclocking will give good/better advice on this.

I set the voltage to 1.340v. Although on CPUZ its showing 1.264v. ;L

bit of ahigh voltage

give you an idea im running my i5 4.4ghz @ 1.3v, temps low 60's

0.04v might seem small but i bet you will see nice 3-5C temp drop dropping your voltage down to 1.3v and it will still be rock solid stable.

Well I have been running HWMonitor for 10mins approx and temps are 68-70C max at 4.2GHz.

Maybe there could have been an error when reading the temp of the cores with core temp?

Here is my CPUZ:-

My cpu is at 4.3GHz with a max temp of 70C. Any good for the 2500K? Also I can't go any higher without having a BSOD. I have set the core voltage to 1.340v in the BIOS but in CPUZ it is reading 1.264v still. ;L

higher core votlage higher temps,, lower voltage to 1.300V and check temps

post back

Hey,

I tried 1.30,1.31,1.32,1.33 and with all of them I recieved a BSOD. Switching it back to 1.34v it is working ok under load. Max temps of:- 66-70C so far.

Am I ruining my CPU with all these BSOD's? :(
Thanks.

no mate bsod are natural when trying to overclock :) it just means your overclock failed and you need to either up voltages or lower speeds :)

66-70C is fine mate

enjoy

PS: things like tidying up cables (cable management), extra case fans, better quality case fans (high cfm) can all help to reduce CPU temps, what cpu cooler are you using now?

but if i was you i'd just stick with this,

Is it probably that I just hit the max this CPU can go with my A50 cooler? I know that every CPU is different when OC'ing but I've heard that with an aftermarket cooler it's pretty easy to get it to 4.5GHz.

Oh well. My next upgrade will be going to better fans for case and a better cooler.

I've also just OC'ed my gtx560ti to 980Mhz. Wasn't stable at 1GHz. ;L Thanks for the help! :)

yeah cpu cooler make a big difference but also the motherboard,

more expensive motherboards tend to be better at overclocking, cheaper ones have less features etc. If you put your chip in better motherboard it might do better or it might be the luck of the draw with the cpu ( not all cpu are born equal) and it will always perform at 4.2ghz :)

In my case i think my motherboard is stopping me going to high speed so im stuck at 4.4ghz which im fine with tbh

In most games gpu will have bigger impact on performance than what speed your i5 is set at, because really nothing pushes an i5 2500k too hard game wise.

im using hyper 212 cpu cooler, cost about £20. But im using lower vcore hence lower temps.

Ummm... After all this OC'ing I had to change everything back to default settings. I got a BSOD at 4.3GHz and an error on prime95. I hope my CPU is not going. :( It also won't let me update windows experience index.

Damn, I only got this comp yesterday. :( :(

won't let me update windows experience index.
Go into windows experience index, on the left side click on Advanced tools, and at the top of the page there is an option to clear all windows experience index scores and re-rate the system (Force a complete re-run of windows experience index tests).

core i5 2500k help

i am having the same problems as you qwenty20 and iv not attempted to overclock yet.i am hoping its a problem with coretemp.i have reseated the cooler and now 3 cores are hitting 98c

Try using RealTemp instead of CoreTemp. It will still show the max temp your cores reached & will help you determine if it really is your cores spiking to this high temp.
