At Tech Ed and a guy just got in from the states and showed his colleague a new tablet that is being announced in a few weeks. I was standing nearby so asked about it. He's under a NDA and wouldn't tell me the brand but let me have a look at windows 7 in action on it.

When he showed me the system properties it had the system manufacturer logo on it before he noticed and put it away hurriedly. Turns out it's a Samsung but even though I saw the logo he just said it's a pre production and wouldnt say a model number.

Has a quad core processor and he says he gets 8 hours out of it and it uses some type of new battery technology to achieve this?

Does anyone know what tablet it is? Looked pretty compared to the other windows 7 ones on display! As slim as an iPhone 4 and looks the same sort of materials so high quality.

I wasn't allowed to hold it so can't confirm weight but if the battery life claims are true I want one depending on price!
 
Sure it was windows 7 not a pre beta version of windows 8? Sounds very interesting whatever it is!
 
No it wasn't the one from the cnet link. Had no physical keyboard. When I saw it it looked like a samsung galaxy tab. Same sort of size and maybe a mm or so thicker but it has a square "windows" key.

Definitely windows 7 at the moment as he brought up the system properties and that's when someone in the small crowd that had formed said "Oh it's a samsung as it has the manufacturers logo showing!" to which the guy then quickly hid it away. He wasn't the best though as I saw the "G" from samsung on the back as he put it away!

Apparently it will be running windows 8 and will be the tablet used to showcase windows 8 in a few weeks at some Microsoft event.
 
Nice, it'll probably be a old tab 10 prototype with a quadcore ARM A9/A15 running Win 8 beta (looks just like win 7 atm)
No idea about a new battery? It should get 8 hours anyway... (no low power quad x86 is in the pipeline/technically viable atm.)
 
Has to be a good sign hardware wise if they are using Samsung for their test build. Windows 8 with a Samsung device with nice battery life. It will probably cost loads or have a rubbish user interface though as every time I get excited I always get disappointed with the results.

If I find out anything tomorrow I'll post here.
 
A good windows tablet would be an awesome piece of kit, especially with a laptop dock and stuff.

As long as the touchscreen works well with W7...

I also hate the look of windows 8.

I hope the tablet versions will only include the widgets?
Just give me a plain wallpaper with some weather and system info and that'll do. I don't need facebook, and whatever the hell MS are pushing to be running all the time.
I also have a bad feeling like their windows game thing you'll need to sign up and log in for everything. Again no need, puts me off buying/playing them.

will buy a tablet then, sorry but not into google (ie not too concerned about user privacy, just read/listen to eric schmidt's views on matter - doesn't inspire trust) or apple (nice but proprietary - not an itunes etc... fan).

am sure they will be lagging in apps compared to android or IOS5, but i expect that will change over time since W8 promises to integrate desktop/touch natively. fingers crossed, but looks like what i am hoping/waiting for. doubt it will be before end 2012 though :(

17"-22" touch screen removable from dock/stand connected to PC would rule, afterall it's not like i would use a tablet outside the home (smartphones are as big as i would want on the go). may be a while though before any manufacturer plays with that crazy idea

Personally a slide out 12-13 incher would do me perfectly...

17+ would be too big to use unless you are at your desk, in which case you may as well use a wacom or mouse/keyboard combo (in fact Saxon are releasing something similar soon). A small touch device that is as powerful as a standard laptop with a pull out set of keys (ala ee pad) would remove the need for me to have a laptop and tablet.
