Ok.. screw it.. I'm gonna get the wife a nice Tablet (10" or bigger) rather than a cheap one I was looking for.

I'd like to be able (if possible) to use a video chat client from PC to tablet with her (as she'll be in USA), so that's important feature. I've seen a dual boot win 7/android view sonic device, but do I need win 7 to have video chat client for PC to tablet?

Decent battery would be nice, but if the unit is 'that' good not a major issue if not 'brilliant'

I'd like the screen to be very good as I'd really like her to have a quality bit of kit to look/use.

I don't really think she'd use that much memory capacity to be utterly honest (so 16GB would probably be acceptable rather than a 64GB beast), but if there is a reason to get a higher spec/memory version then please tell me :-)

I'm thinking Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" or Asus Transformer etc... BUT is there anything I should be hanging on till the end of the month for?

Skype works pretty well on the iPad 2, I've been using it a lot to those with the pc client installed (I'm sure it works well on Android tablets as well, judging from the app on my Galaxy S).

So don't need Windows 7.

Ipad2 huh? Seriously?

Lets face it, all other current tablets are ipad2 knockoffs. Why not pay the same price and get the real deal rather than an second rate imitator? The ipad2 does everything you need it to do, comes with a mature, whole software ecosystem, I don't see how anyone can take a non-ipad2 tablet seriously.

I bought an iPad 2 16gb WiFi last month.

If I had the option to buy a tablet again, I'd make the same decision.

Because many people don't like the mandatory requirement of the usage of iTunes?

iPad 2 would be a good fit, but personally I'd go with the Galaxy Tab.

Why not ask her if she has another Apple device first?

The ipad2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" and Asus Transformer will all do want you want.

The Asus Transformer (with keyboard dock) would be my choice because it has:

- 15 hrs of battery life
- MicroSD slot
- Full size SD slot
- 2 full sized usb slots
- High Quality IPS display with 1280*800 res
- Android Honeycomb 3.2 OS (with added Asus goodies)
- Looks Cool.

ipad 2

easy. the iTunes is a total non issue imo , whats the difference between dragging files to 'iPad' in iTunes and dragging files to an sd card folder in explorer ? about ten seconds ?

the transformer does look good too mind.

iPad 2, Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer, Motorola Xoom, Acer Iconia will all do what you want.
iTunes is a non issue - drag into iTunes or drag into Explorer, doesn't really matter.
I have an Asus Transformer and it does everything I want it to do and for me and the wife the keyboard dock is a big advantage.

However, if she is used to Windows why not just get her an excellent Netbook?

For her use, probably, but it does depend on the use. If you want to use the internal storage as a mass storage device for work files etc then it is an issue. I could never use an Apple device for instance because I need to use my phone/tablet for transporting video files without converting.

the problem i have with ipad is you cant help but feel they actually dont add features to it on purpose.

for example the original ipad had no camera for video calling, yet current iphones had them, etc. that just doesnt make any sense.

now ipad 2 has the exact same screen as ipad 1. neither of them have flashes either.

so ipad 3 will have either a better screen or a flash.

ipad 4 will have whatever they left out on ipad 3, etc.

i wish a company would for once do the right thing and make a tablet with all the features instead of worrying about what they should leave out for the next revision.

^ Don't forget it's only got 512mb too, that rules out proper multitasking/major iOS update and could limit the gpu somewhere down the line. Shhh...

iPad 2 for yourself, errr the wife ;)
