Stuff the cheapies gonna get wife a nice Tablet

If you are going to recommend an iPad you need to be in the Apple sub forum. This is Mobile Phones & Tablets ;)

They have to overlap in some cases. I'm quite happy to do the overlapping even though a lot of people in here have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to Apple.

The iPad and iPhone stuff should be in this forum, but for obvious reasons they aren't in here unfortunately.

the iTunes is a total non issue imo , whats the difference between dragging files to 'iPad' in iTunes and dragging files to an sd card folder in explorer ? about ten seconds ?

Hmm.. Does Apple support MP4/H.263/4 video in AVI/MKV containers now?

Last time I owned an Apple product it didn't even support MP3s without conversion :(

If you're looking for simple and easy to use I'd recommend an iPad2, however I'd personally never buy one.

It IS for my wife, I prefer the functionality of laptops... well i would if I didnt hate trackpads. She has already said she doesnt want a netbook when looking around stores.

I had stayed away from Apple (but not excluded it) because they are expensive just to be expensive. However, after a fair few recommendations I have to consider it. (even though you are then locked into Apple and arggh-tunes). We both like the look of the Ipad2 but haven't really looked at tablets properly.

My wife won't want to to know about a tablet if she has to make a million and one tweaks change. She isnt a techy like me, she will just want it to work. (I am sure she will personalise it though!)

I like the sound of the transformer dock. Only thought I heard someone mention the transformer 2?

I will take a peek at all of these tablets, including the sony.

Transformer :D Excellent tab

But when is the transformer 2 due?

Might as well get a ipad as apple are trying to ban every tablet !!

D'oh, cheap paracetomol from supermarkets is stuffed then! (Apple won't win btw.. madness to think they will). I think Apple is gonna get slapped hard with counter litigation.

If you're a non-techy an iPad 2 is best as non techies go for that and people at work will just say to her "Why didn't you get an iPad?!".

I've had both an iPad and a honeycomb tablet and didn't keep either. Don't really see the need for them but if I had to choose one I would go for the iPad. The honeycomb tablet could do flash but that just meant lots of adverts and the streaming video was choppy meaning I had to use my laptop anyway making it pointless. The iPad would have a higher resell value.

The girlfriend tried both and much preferred how simple the iPad was to use. Girls will 99% of the time go for iPads I would say as that's what they see in the adverts.

I'm fortunate to have every tablet in your list or have tested them each for >3 months and if you're technical they are pretty much the same for the cost, but for those who arn't technical it's the ipad all the way.

I'm not saying the Android tablets are poor (my personal one is a transformer), it's just that when you want simplicity for other people - you stick to ipads.

if she isn't techy, just get her an iPad, she will enjoy it the most. If she is a typical girl then it is also the tablet she would be most proud of showing off too mates, family etc

In every review of tablets I have read they have always concluded that the tablet on review isn't as good as an iPad as an overall package

She's not a 'typical' girl, and isn't interested in 'showing off'. She's more street wise and clued in on life than I have ever been. However, she ain't a tech person, and will also have no interest in downloading music/video's from itunes, so that's a mute point.

She'll want it to browse the web, use facebook (including 'Farmville' I imagine!! - is that a flash game?), and look for things to buy for our little girl, and maybe go on the 'in the night garden' website or something similar. Also, I expect she will want it to be used as a web cam to talk to me, and for my little girl to be able to see and talk to me.

Simplicity is nice, but I need it to do the above.

iPad 2. Don't deliberate. I don't think you'll go far wrong with it. Excellent returns / resale options if it isn't right anyway.

I'll be spending £300 - £500, I will certainly be wanting to get the best option and taking my time (Although after a little wine last night I very almost purchased a tablet which would have been a bad idea lol).

Flash works perfect when I tried youtube HD in the browser (android 3.2 - asus transformer). And there will be add-on for the browser no doubt to block the flash-ads.

Also Android 3.2 perfectly smooth compared to 3.0 in all areas.

I'm guessing you tried flash on 3.0.

I'm not sure why you think this, the iPad 2 is more or less the same price as everything else (same goes for the iPhone SIM-free).

As has been stated, it is the best overall tablet package especially when you consider ease of use. It may not do quite as much as Android tablets, but it is the best in class at everything that it does do - and it will comfortably do everything she wants.
