Do you help keep torrents alive?

With 50 down/1 up even the consideration of sharing is ridiculous. I used to share when I had 10 down/10 up.

Anyway I use Usenet 95% of the time with my free account ;)

Sometimes I do.... especially if its a rare item that lacks seeders and has taken weeks to download.

If its some mass seeded popular item that is doing fine.... then often I don't, there's little need.

I use Put.io so it pulls down the torrent for me and seeds it to 1:1 and I can download it after it's finished downloading on Put.io (not to mention premium Rapidshare ect). No need for me to spend my upload bandwidth on a torrent seed. :)

I used to use torrents back when I was like 14/15. I used to be part of a couple really highly regarded private trackers. Guaranteed maximum throughput etc... But I've never looked back since I discovered NNTP.

BitTorrent is a great protocol and kudos to the man who invented it, but NNTP is just superior in many ways.

Usenet and such confuse me. I find it odd that people pay to pirate.

Private trackers often have open-days. They aren't that difficult to get into.

well, being in an area of London that BT and Virgin are far too scared to go i'm stuck on 20 year old copper at max 3Mbps down and 444Kbps up.

so if i was to seed, max i would be able to seed is 40K/s and that would disrupt everything i do on the net quite badly.

i seed while i'm downloading, but i have to reduce the seed to <= 20KB/s to leave the internet usable.

updating wow or other torrent based mmos is a nightmare during peak times.

I will only use torrents if there is 0 results for the files I wish to acquire if its not on the file hosts OR the files are uploaded to a host i dislike i.e fileserve.

I've actually never had an issue with torrents, always decent speeds, even on public trackers. Unless ofcourse you're leeching from 2/3 seeders. Which is a limitation of the method I'll admit.

this, i always get my ratio to 1:1 and then stop it

Go in. Hit hard and get out. I have a reasonable upload so bigger torrents (10gb+) do get something out of me. Oh and I only accept encrypted connections and use an up to date blocklist.

I know Usenet is probably better but paying to pirate is massively ironic anyway.

Nothing wring with torrents, they are free.
I'll upload a lot if its something rare/obscure, if it's something very mainstream I just hit and run.

I share at my internets full upload speed while downloading then once its finished I close utorrent. I think that's fair tbh.

I try to use web hosters as much as possible though. The capchas can be a PITA though :(.
