So I am moving to Canada, good thing do happen sometimes :D Any advice from other expats?

Maybe Canadians were more sensible with their money and there isn't an impending doom of an housing bubble?

Massive envy :D

If you don't go skiing then you are doing something wrong :)

HA! I have never been Skiing before despite the fact I grew up in Germany!

I am dead keen to have a go at it though. It will probably be our first holiday once were out there :D I suppose kids can start skiing as soon as they can walk lol.

Book my flight out there last night :D C-Day is Oct 18th!

Good luck to you. I have a friend working in the same industry who is struggling too.
Plenty of engineering jobs in Canada at the moment, especially in Alberta.

Are you moving out for good or is this a suck it and see kind of deal? Congrats anyway! :)

Well I am going with the full intention of staying there long term but yeah like you said if we dont like it we will come back!

My thinking was that if you turned down an opportunity like this that you would regret it for the rest of your life so I just went for it.

Either way I will get some good work and life experience and should be able to recify my poor financial status within a year or two! So no bad points really.

For every british family moving from the UK to another country.

500 families from poland, pakistan and across asia flood into the UK.

We will sink soon. Worlds biggest Titanic.

All in all OP, congrats, enjoy, and when you get there, loads of pictures :) oh and, enjoy the winter when it arrives, more snow there than will ever arrive in england :)

Good on you. I've just had a two week holiday in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and if I could, I'd move there to live. It's such a beautiful place; great cities and great country-side.

Out of interest, what did the rest of yours and your partners wife think of this? Will your partner cope well without her friends and family? Hopefully neither of you will get too homesick... Canada has a lot to offer which will keep you both busy I'm sure. As you will be working and the wife won't, make sure she gets out of the house as much as possible whilst you're at work. Get her joining clubs or anything, just to make sure she makes friends as obviously you'll make connections at work.

From my own personal experience moving to Oz I've met a lot of people who didn't do any of the above. My old mate from Uni got a job and made loads of friends, whilst his misses struggled a bit (mostly, in part, due to her not meeting as many people) so she got terribly home sick.

Regardless, you have a great opportunity, once in a lifetime so just make sure the 3 of you make the most of it.

Homesickness isn't a factor for me really, I love my family but I hardly see them as it is and they only live 50-100 miles away. I grew up moving around all over the place living in Germany so being out of the country is no issue. Adapt and conquer ;)

My misses was slightly apprehensive at first because of leaving the family behind but she is sort of in the same situation as me in that her family are only 50 miles away and we hardly see them either. Granted we see them more than my family but still only once every few months really.

We moved away from our home town when we were 18-20 and have never looked back really. Currently we have a few friends dotted about here and there but largely spend all our time just me, her and the baby.

I have heard that the Canadians are a lot more family orientated than we are and that you are expected to socialise with work colleages more which works fine for us. Hopefully there will be more young families to meet too as since we have had our daughter we are kind of alienated from our group of good friends as they don't have children.

Well done mate! Very happy for you. I hope to do this too at some stage :)

The company that you will be working for must definitely have an IT department? Let me know if there are any jobs going in there ;)

Congratulations. I am very jealous. I spent 6 months on a contract in Vancouver and hope to one day return to live. Stunning place. Stunning country.
