protesters burn us flag in london

Both are very offensive so why is only one illegal?

Could it not be classed as racial crime because it is so offensive to the western world.?

I remember some musician was being prosecuted on the iow because he offended a Chinese couple for singing kung fu fighting as part of his act.

Could this not be construed the same but much worse?

Political statements are not offensive, they are political statements. If burning a US flag constitutes removing freedoms from an individual then why were Americans burning the Union Flag only last year, there was no outcry about how offensive it was or calls for them to be imprisoned or deported, why should there be now just because it is burned by people of a different faith?

Burning a holy book isn't illegal either as long as it doesn't constitute an act of racial or religious hatred. Unfortunately burning a Koran is forbidden by the Islamic faith thus the dilemma regards burning one in public.

Burning a flag however, any flag, is purely a statement of a political nature, there is no belief or faith that contends that flag burning is blasphemous so why take notice of it, they want you to take notice and by doing so you are simply giving them what they desire.

You keep on mentioning the burning of the Union flag? I must have missed that story, when are where did it happen?

Btw I think political statements CAN be offensive.

The Western world is not all one race, and they are citizens of the Western world. It'd be a tough sell.

10 points for anyone who can guess the one newspaper with an article on this on the first results page on Google when searching for kung fu fighting sued.

So what?

You are as bad as them if you want to take away their rights, simply because you disagree with them.

Ill agree if they are directly inciting violence, but otherwise, no...we aren't barbarians.

Imagine a uniformed American soldier desecrating the Qur'an.

It's not comparable, though, unless you are contending that the American flag is a religious symbol.

Now, I suppose there is an interesting parallel to be drawn, given that Americans do have laws about flags not being mistreated, etc, and Muslims believing that the Qu'ran must not be mistreated, but you're still talking about faith vs law and religion vs politics.

Why is burning a US flag offensive to the Western World?

Normally I wouldn't be bothered but to do it on 9/11 has really struck a chord with me and I'm sure many others who may do more than just talk about it on a forum.
