"Trains are a rich man's toy" says Transport Minister.

When times are better, would anyone be wanting to see the re-nationalisation of the railways again? The private companies are basically just state backed monopolies so there would be no difference and people could actually be held to account for failures.

I don't see Blair being held for his failures, government frankly can go to hell, if the riots/last few decades/etc are anything to go by, less government would be much appreciated.

My season ticket for the year was 2k  for overcrowed late trains total rip off but my only other alternative is a 13 mile bike ride each way :o

They have got commuters by the balls!

Yep, I'll be starting my new job Monday, my first in the city itself, and will probably end up buying monthly travel cards as I can't afford an annual one in one go (my sister is lucky enough that her job pay for hers and then take it out her pay monthly). As I'm in Zone 6 in the South East that will also be a cool £2k+ a year, not to mention the annoying fact that to get to the Canary Wharf area you really need to go up to London Bridge and then go back out again (I could get a train to Lewisham then do a couple of changes on the DLR but I don't think it would be any quicker. The only consolation is that my hours mean I can get a fast train both there and back as I'm doing 8-8's 3-4 days a week, although initially it's a Mon-Fri normal hours jobby to train me. Also if I was one more stop out (which isn't even that far) I'd be paying even more. Where does all this money go!?

Southeastern are terrible generally and I'm sure it won't be long before I suffer delays, have to pull out the list of alternate routes I've written down or have to suffer a bus service.

The only good thing is that at least when I get out at London Bridge my inner architecture nerd can gawp at the Shard as the viewing gallery and spire section are completed and it's grubby glass is given a clean. :D

Train travel in this country is pathetc and has been for a long time.

Birmingham to London takes lees than two hours
London to Norwich takes less than two hours
Yet travel from Norwich to Birmingham and it can take 4 hours and costs over £60.

I travelled about 400 miles on TGV for £35 in France a week ago. On a much better train than the ones I see around here and with loads of leg room. Oh and it was on time.
Good lord and I thought trains here in France are overpriced. If you found the TGV cheap I shudder to think what you're paying for a rail fare in the UK :p

How are you getting them so cheap?

I can't get a single from Cambridge to London for less than £20 booking as far in advanced a possible.
Cambridge to London is just very expensive, no matter when you book. The cheapest way possible is to get 4 of you. You get a 4 for 2 deal off peak which brings the price down to £10 each for same day return.

It's no help if you're commuting though which is about £38 if you buy on the day. It doesn't get much cheaper in advance either.

I'm pretty sure you post something similar in every train thread. Everyone knows it's cheaper to book in advance but that's clearly not always possible so I'm not sure what you're actually contributing here.

Indeed. My mother in law, resident in Lancashire, got an email yesterday evening asking if she could appear in court (expert witness, yo) at 9:30 the next morning. In Middlesex. Cue £400 return train fare.

The best part was that they called her when she was 10 minutes from the court house and told her they didn't need her any more.

It would be nice if the exorbitant fees I have to pay to get to work would mean that I get a reliable service, however I am constantly a victim of delays, cancellations, and general ****-ups. And this is between Norwich and Ipswich. *sigh*

£400? It's £300 for an anytime return...

I agree though peak prices are mental. £80 for an open return for any offpeak period is far more sensible.

Train prices can be a bit high

Last year I paid £75 to goto liverpool and im going again next week but tryna hold out for decent return prices but I don't think I'll get it any cheaper than £75

I don't mind paying this as I don't drive but it is a bit high imo

But thats as much our geography as it is the rail network.

It's only 160 miles from Birmingham to Norwich yet it takes 3 hours in the car. Birmingham to Penrith is almost 20 miles further yet takes less time..

Yea - anyone would think London was the hub of the entire transport system, and all road and rail leads only there. Oh, wait a moment...

You can use the return portion of an offpeak return in the morning peak IIRC.
If true surely it would almost always be cheaper to get an offpeak return the night before, bought online you could pick up at any station.

Cambridge to London is something of a special route seemingly, definitely to Kings X I don't think you can get any discounts at all, maybe some available to liv st but not sure.

Do people actually have a problem with leg room on our trains? Compared to coaches, planes and even cars they actually seem pretty good.

Yep. I have to sit with my legs at a weird angle so they don't end up squished against the person opposite. If i can get a seat that is.

Its go nothing to do with geography and everything to do with the fact that the train from Norwich only going 50mph and the ones to London going anywhere between 70-100+ depending on which ones you get.

I need to book in advance if I stand any chance of seeing my parents or family, I don't drive right now, and going by coach can often be just as expensive.

London Kings Cross to Darlington is usually around £106 for the super off-peak return ticket.

Booked last week to go at the end of October, coming back a week later and it cost £31 return which I can deal with... means being at Kings Cross by 6am though.

We need to start an 'Ask Fox how to get the cheapest train ticket' thread where we can post seemingly simple train journeys and he can work out the random route which gives us the best tickets.

This would be mine if I took the train.

It's actually come down a lot in the last two years but still works out more than driving. Especially as the station isn't in my home town, so I would still have to drive and pay to park at the station.

Good! Although I'm often dismayed seeing people of a lower class in 1st class just because the tickets have been discounted. Should keep all 1st class tickets discount free imo.
