AMD 7000 series details leaked

So.... in summary we know nothing !

Timing is a bugger as my brothers card died and he either buys now or doesn't get to play BF3 when its released! (told him to buy cheap now and run it at low settings and then upgrade cf Jan / Feb)

Would have been so much easier if the 7 series release date plus specs were confirmed.

The XDR2 RAM is unlikely, but the fact that it says the 7950 has 30 CUs when they can only be included in multiples of four (as compute unit arrays) in GCN is worse. Maths fail on the part of the rumour makers. :p

Edit: Also Thames isn't a "Southern Island". It's a river. You should know this. At a stretch, it's a town in New Zealand, although it isn't really an island. Either way, the "Thames" name is much more consistent with the older rumours that the mobile parts are named after places in London, like "Wimbledon", "Heathrow", etc.

A guy on Beyond3D said that the "Thames" chip is a laptop one as well, not a desktop. So again, more to assume that the leaks are a bit bogus.

The 6950 is on offer for £199.99 this week with 2 games. I mean you could buy cheap and wait, but I'd be surprised if the current mid-high end AMD/Nvidia cards didn't perform well on BF3 and the other AAA games coming out. Could always crossfire another 6950 when the 7 series come out, the prices on the 6 series would drop quite a bit.

Well, Q4 is only about 3 weeks away, so may not be too long to wait (fingers crossed even though i can't afford an upgrade:mad:).

Actual 'quarters' depend on who your talking to to be quite honest. Some go by a calendar year, others go by fiscal year because they're talking about money on the books. If its an industry meeting, theres every likelyhood they're talking business terms.

In the states, Q4 ends on the 31st of Sept.
Does that mean, as a US company, its due before the end of the month... i think not. :D

There really is little point getting too invested with these bits of leaked info because unless theres context to it, its worthless. Q4 has a span of 9 months depending on the context & local practice.
I think USA Q1 is October, the 'Traditional' lay-persons calendar would be Jan, and im not sure if Asia's Q1 starts in March. So Q1 is anywhere from October till July... so right now all we can rule out is a couple of months inbetween.

Don't forget that AMD actively partake in misinformation to track leaks, so XDR2 could be real, or it could just be the fake info they gave to one source, that if it got out lets them know where the leak came from.

They are on top of the leaks issue, but makes it a bit harder to judge the real info, as such, the Thames chip could be the laptop version, or that could have been another bit of slight misinformation, and Thames is the desktop version :p

As for GNC, again, mostly down to misinformation probably, its more likely to be around a 10% drop in shader power as thats the rough amount theres usually been between the top two cards for a while now.

It can also be the case, as with Charlie, that they are purposefully fudging a few bits of information to stop AMD from being able to work out who leaked to them.

yup got to agree with DM, there is just too many unknowns to be able to say what is or isn't real.

other than Graphics Core Next...... don't worry i had to go look it up to make sure it wasn't me getting it the wrong way round :D

Think its worth waiting to upgrade my GPU then?
Currently running stock and barely able to cope with newer games as I want highest settings on high FPS with a low resolution of 1680 x 1050 (1920 x 1080) in future.
Pay high end for a card now or will I be devastated that I could have overclocked and waited a few month and got better performance / future proofing!

i7 920 (C0?) old version anyway (H50 Cooler)
Intel Smackover DX58SO
6GB Tripple chan
ATI HD 4870 512mb
700W PSU
Antec 600 case

What you could look at is something stupidly good value now, 6950's aren't bad value, but, nothing like a £100 5850, or see if someone is selling a second hand 5850 for around that, maybe less. A 6950 will drop in price a lot, a 580gtx price will drop like a bomb, a second hand 5850, 470gtx, won't drop in value anywhere near as much, so if you're desperate that would be the way to insulate yourself from losing a lot of value.

In general I wouldn't be buying till the new gen is out, either performance and pricing is awesome, or they'll cause awesome EOL pricing on current stuff, its a win either way.

Thanks for quick reply! I haven't overclocked my setup yet so that should get me by until these new cards come out. Think I can wait until Jan before an upgrade if the newer cards are going to be released by then. I usually get price/performance cards but figured I spend £20 here and there so may as well make my next purchase a top card and benefit from it.

Again, most sources are claiming this leak is bogus, with very few reputable sites running with the story. Plenty of sites who will know fairly accurate info will be under NDA's but can repeat news if others have, and most sites aren't repeating it.

It could be true, its likely not, XDR2 looks pretty good but seemingly unlikely, possible but unlikely.

Basically theres literally no way to know if a single piece of that leak is accurate. Dates wise, it really doesn't appear so.

I also wouldn't bet on a 28nm "cayman" shrink to be just a shrink, and be at 6970 performance, I think it could be 20-30% faster, think what they learned on the efficiency of the front end on the 6870 and ask yourself why AMD would not improve it if they had the option to increase performance for the same die size and cost.

How fast do you think a 6870 would be, with 20-25% more efficient VLIW 4 shaders over VLIW 5 it had, it would put it very close to Cayman already with 30% less shaders.

You basically had the 5870, then two architectures based off it, Cayman with vastly improved shaders, and the 6870, with vastly improved front end, I'd expect AMD to combine the best of both for any new parts based off VLIW 4.

Timeframe wise the leaks info on dates and process don't seem to tie in with what the guys who generally get AMD info right are saying either.

whatever happens i hope the top end cards are out before/around the time BF3 launches...my overclocked 5850 runs BC2 ok, but i'd really like something that could walk all over BF3 at high settings

I'm also ready to buy a top end gfx card after a couple of years of buying something further down the line, then regreting it and upgrading again sooner.

8800gt to 4890 to 4890 crossfire to 5850... would have been so much simpler if i just bought a 5870 on release day...

I'm getting to the point where I don't think I can wait much longer to replace my 260 gtx sli. I was holding out for 7970 release but if it is Q1 2012 I don't think I will be able to resist a couple of 6970s (or a 6990) that long.

December is the earliest possible launch but its most likely gonna be January-February time.

Bulldozer we might see end of October if were lucky.
