Pics?

Which model did you guys get and how much you paid ?

£399.99 for the 16 Gb verison, I was going to get the 3G version but its not worth it as I can personally tether it to my phone. :)

Ill uploaded some pictures in the morning.

Had a go on one today and i was impressed. It was nice and smooth. Quick loading apps and the browser.

Also felt incredibly light and nice and slim.

Think i may have to get one :)

It looks nice, and I'd be tempted if it had an gigabit ethernet port. It's not going to be able to handle HD content over wifi.

I've tried a few HD content demos and so far and i have not had a problem.

However, HD content does vary massively.

The design looks really... wrong, somehow. It seems well made but it just looks like theres too much going on, some pointless tackings on resulting in an unclean, un-tablet design.

As to specs, seems alright, and I like the addition of the IR port. Software seems useful in general too.

Would I choose it over an Apple or Samsung? Not sure, probably not.

lol

I have just tried the new Sony S in a shop and found it to be everything the Galaxy Tab is not. It is a much purer Android experience with none of those silly Samsung add ons that generally hinder not help in day to day performance, such as the screen capture button on top of the standard android ones.

The onscreen keyboard on the Sony is far more receptive to finger touches and suffers none of the lag.

Physically it is similar to the samsung but I like the protruding rear which does make it a more pleasant experience to look at once laid down on a flat surface.

So for me the Sony is everything the Samsung promised to be but isn't.

Would I buy one?

Not whilst I have a cheapo Touchpad but if I had to chose an Android tablet the Sony really does get the vote from me.

its great if you only want to use the tablet in landscape. it woukd annoy the crap out of me in portrait. ie, whenever i wanted to type something - i hate typing on a touchscreen in landscape. Any touchscreen, phones, tablets, whatever. hate it. what's it like reading ebooks ?

Have you held one to know?

Fitted perfectly in my hand in portrait and was simple to type with but I don't really understand why anyone would hold a tablet in portrait anyway, its not a phone but more akin to a small PC screen and you don't turn them on their side?

It looks OK but why get it over a Tab 10.1?

"Because it's made by Sony" won't be accepted as an answer :p

IR means you can use it as a remote control for your AV equipment... thats a pretty damn awesome feature to have, and it provides a lot of the functionality found in 200 quid touch-based remotes from Logitech etc. Pretty damn impressive actually http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbYzckPXJ2Q

Also it has an SD slot, which the 10.1 doesn't have.

Eek... the more videos I see the more impressed I am, my only qualms are the design/shape, concerns were raised in an Engadget review: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/31/sony-tablet-s-preview/

But, try to use this slate in any other position and the design becomes something of a hindrance. Sitting on a lap in landscape, for example, we found the incline a bit too steep. Meanwhile, in portrait orientation you'll never manage to get the screen flat -- it's always angled one way or another.

Hold it in both hands and you'll also be struggling. We found the 9.4-inch screen to be a little too wide to comfortably type on with our thumbs. Turn it 90 degrees and it's much easier to opposably tap at the thing, but then the somewhat sharp edges on the skinny side start cutting into your palms. Unless we were sitting with this on a desk, we had a hard time getting comfortable typing on the Tablet S, and while that's a problem that can be assigned to any tablet these days, the asymmetrical styling isn't much help.

Also that im not sure how much long-term grunt the 1ghz Tegra 2 really provides, especially considering the next generation of Tegra is just around the corner.

yes i have briefly and in answer to your second question i've already alluded to that in my previous post - to read ebooks. or do you hold books sideways? :p

I hold books with two pages facing me, something that you can do with a tablet in landscape mode. So the idea of flicking one page at a time is more alien to me.

That's what I was thinking :p.

Still, I wouldn't buy it mainly due to the shape, it would annoy me. I'd get the Galaxy Tab if I were to get a tablet I think.

But you dont read both pages at once, youe eye only reads down one page. On a tablet in landscape mode, the text extends accross the whole screen, giving a different (worse imo)nexperience to reading a normal page as you would in portrait mode.

On a tablet I read the left page and then the right page all in one pane, just as I do with every book I have ever read in the last 33 years.

I understand some people may find they prefer to hold a tablet as an ereader in portrait mode but I don't.

As for the Sony if you want to hold it in portrait, it lends itself well to forming a natural part of the palm of your hand.

As much as I wanted to like the Samsung 10.1 I just couldn't cope with all the fiddling (aka touchwiz) and the lag. Neither of these issues is a problem with the Sony.

Now I just need to source one for a decent price as I find that the £400 price bracket of these things is ridiculous. Best I don't mention that to the wife again as she bought me a £650 ipad for my birthday and I told her to take it back. Jesus that was not fun !

exactly. how many landscape ebook readers are there? not many (any ?)
