Im doing a bit of research for a new product range intended for the residential market. It’s a remote control device that sits between the wall socket and plug. Basically it allows you to turn the power on or off to your home appliances, from anywhere in the World.

It can be controlled by phone app (for iphones currently) or web based application – sending messages via the GSM network to the socket device. The app shows the current on/off status and allows you to remotely switch on or off instantly.

Is there anything like this that already exists? Would you want one?

Im thinking if they came in packs of 3 sockets, with free issue phone app, and maybe 100 free remote switchings after which its 10p a go…?

Interested to hear your thoughts!

A remote plug is already out there - maybe not one that can do it worldwide, but then who would need such a feature?

Can you give any examples of why it would be useful?

Well i could understand its use if you leave something on electrical wise while your out of the house but.. i always check everything anyway..

While in the house seems like it would be less hassle to get off my butt and turn it off myself :p

I saw something like this on TV a couple of years ago.

And who the hell would want to pay out for all this stuff and *then* pay "per-switch" after 100 "free" switches???

For one... this tech already exists... i'm sure there's even an iphone app for one or two of the home automation services.

You've been able to control home automation by text message for years.

Go in to your local B&Q and you'll find "your" idea on the shelves... pretty much ;) I know I saw the text message controlled variant there. For the more complicated installs, you generally have to go bespoke - but it's not really that pricey for what it is...

I'll give you the full investment, but I would require 99% of your business and your soul.

This has already been done though btw, pretty sure there was a SIM version years ago, most likely a networked solution these days knocking about.

If someone's on holiday and wants to make it look like there's someone home, to deter burglars.

Although there are similar things at there, already... and I don't think it's a good idea... but I'm just sayin'.

Timed light switcher-onners already exist and don't cost 10p a go!
