Convince me to buy a Civic Type R (EP3)!

Well If I was selling mine up here they go for about 5k and that would get you like mine a 04 plate with just over 70k but If you see one that's at about 70k its going to be due the big service if not done already. Its usually about 350-450 and due between 72.5 and 75k so use that as a bargaining tool.

So for 5k I would be wanting a facelift in great condition that's had its big service dont think your asking to much to get that.

I am under the same username over on ITR-DC5, but I don't post much :)

Good stuff, picked up my 04 NHB one in July-only mods are buddyclub cat back exhaust and mugen carbon fibre bonnet(all done by previous owner).

Starting to notice that she is difficult to get into second? Just bought some gearbox oil from honda to see if that helps.

Good price for an 04 milano. Did you sell it to a friend?

No, car was sold via ebay. I has it up for £5350 a few months back and didn't get a sniff. Relisted 3 weeks ago at £4800 for a quick sale and the guy who bought it on Saturday was the only person who got in tough. It's a buyers market just now with CTRs, when I relisted mine there were 300 others on ebay alone  Also mine wasn't mint, well the inside and engine was, but the wheels were all badly kerbed, would need tyres in a few thousand miles, clutch in the next year, few paint defects. I believe I got a fair price, if it was a minter I would have wanted an extra grand on the sale price.

I'm finding it a real pain to get on with DC5 owners, having someone tell you your car is overpriced is never nice but when you've been trying to sell it for 4 months then that's usually a sign.

I'm finding more and more overpriced cars as the time goes on, I doubt I'm ever going to find something I actually want :(

There is a local Cosmic for sale on Pistonheads, the chap wants £7500 for it, it's a NON Premier and has 33k on it. But he has to take the 'Buddy Spec' exhaust off it first.

It can stay on his drive for that kind of money. Fancy a trip over the pond Muffin'? We'll Import our own DC5s over ;)

I'm feeling that - it's just so demoralizing. I want the right one at the right price like any man but it's a long ass wait.

Going to look at an Elise on Sat  :p

Thanks for the info Dave, can you tell me what the "big service" entails, I've seen one and the seller seems to not know that something major is due @ 75k, the car I have seen is on 76k lol.

I said I need to find out more so I will use this as a bargaining tool, he says it has full service history but he doesn't know about any "big service" so its unlikely it's been done.

he should know if it had the 75k its the one with the eye watering bill compared to the others heh.

75k is usually the full works from spark plugs and gearbox oil, brake fluid all filters etc and a valve clearance check and Adjust at 75k usually what adds a bit as needs to be done when its stone cold. They also check the chain and tensioner and change the coolant when I got a quote at local Honda was over 400

Thanks for the info mate I appreciate that :)

Whats the score with waterpumps on these, are they driven from the aux belts?

Is it common for the timing chain and/or any tensioners to ever need changing?

Not sure on the water pump but its unusual for the chain to need replaced but sometimes tensioners need adjusted.

IIRC the 'BIG' service should be at 50k, not 75.

I don't understand why you're taking so long to buy one. As said above, it's a buyers market if you want a CTR, there are literally hundreds of them. You'd be better off getting a nice 03/53 pre-facelift for ~4k and getting the alloys refurbed and any paintwork niggles sorted yourself. Mileage doesn't really matter on these.

It's not worth wasting any more time looking for the perfect car IMO. It's a fast Honda, it's not a BMW that has to have an immaculate history for it to not explode and cost you a million pounds to repair. You have to do something seriously wrong to break a K20. A little different to the advice you'd get given from the fanboys from the ctr forums but there you go.

I agree with Tim. Two mates bought cheap (at the time) 51 plates for about £3.5k and haven't had any real issues over the past 2/3 years, one of them is over 100k and he bought it with 70k. Cosmetically the paint is thin anyway, if it aint pebble dashed yet it soon will be. Mine was spotless when I bought it, looked like sandpaper on the front after 3 years... but when it was moved on the guy who picked it up said it was in fantastic condition for its age (gee thanks, git! I didn't want it to go :().

I'd love my EP3 back, but I'm hoping to get a DC5 of some sort next year. On a savings mission!
