In my student house the hot water tap takes a damn long time get hot, is there anything I can do to make shaving with barely warm water better?

does anybody use the bay island rum aftershave? meant to have good reccomendations for wet shaving, can anyone give any feedback on it?

I can't see why it would be any different from any other aftershave (note: aftershave not cologne - they are two different things!)

Bay rum is basically bay leaves and rum, if it's classed as an aftershave it will have extra skin conditioning ingredients added, if its classed as a cologne it won't.

Smug answer - boil the kettle instead?

Not so smug answer - possibly some type of pre-shave? I like the Proraso one here but it gets mixed reviews so YMMV.

have a look at the starter kit on traditional shaving site

I've had a quick look through this thread and come up with a basket. Can anyone confirm that this is a good buy, and let me know if I've missed anything?

10 Feather & 10 Derby Extra & 10 Israeli Made Double Edged Razor Blades - £7.19

Pure Badger Shaving Brush - £18.99

Shaving Brush Drip Stand (Clear) - £4.49

Taylor of Old Bond St Shaving Cream (Almond 150g) - £6.99

Merkur Matt Silver Handle Safety Razor 38002 - £34.99

TOTAL - £76.65

Bit expensive :/

I get 100 Derby Extra blades for £10 from eBay and paid about £20 for my razor.

I also use Gilette gel rather than a brush/cream, it works just as well for me.

From the rain forest store you can get an Edwin Jagger badger brush with stand for £22 (or was when I ordered it) shaving a few a couple of quid off. It's the Merkur really bumping your cost up, see if you can get the EJ DE89 was under £17 when I got mine. Remember though the razor is a one off purchase, it's blades only after that for the rest of your life at 10p a pop for Derby's. You can get a tube of traditional palmolive shave cream from Lloyds pharmacy for £1.75 and it's pretty good, not be as good as the TOBS though.

Alright had a look round and found the following:

Taylor of Old Bond Street St. James Shaving Cream (150 g) Bond Street - £6.20

Edwin Jagger Handmade Imitation Ebony Shaving Brush (Best Badger Hair) with Drip Stand - Small - £21.00

Edwin Jagger De89bl Chrome Plated Double Edge Safety Razor - £17.10 (comes with five Derby blades)

TOTAL - £44.30

Should be good for an initial purchase and to get me started. The price is more like it too.

Thanks. :)

Can't recommend the DE safety razors enough. Blades are dirt cheap. You can pick up 100 superior platinum blades for around a tenner from the rainforest which will last you for years. Imo those standard shavers you get in the shops is probably the biggest farce of the market. I get much better, smoother and less irritable shaves using them for a fraction of the price.

Great. Don't worry about the cost. With DE shaving thats pretty much the only cost since shaving is so cheap with them after that so they will pay themselves off easily compared to buying a four pack of standard blades that come with usual commerical razors for around £5. Buy various blade packs (check out the astra ones too) to see which ones go well with your razor and give you a better shave. Once you decided which ones are good for you, get blades in bulk which will last you for years for well under £20

sounds like it's your first time so go slowly as you could cut your face quite easily with these.

I wanted to try shaving traditionally, but spending over 50 quid to try it out seemed expensive. But now ive seen the DE89L I'm gonna give it a go. Do i just also need cream and a brush and blades? Any cheap options around to test the waters?
