Money

No I'm staff, I'm in this for the long run, I want to be running the company sooner or later.

From where i am its > Senior > Principle > Manager > Director.

Should be chartered and senior this year :) then just steps up. Project engineers find it hard to move to senior roles.

You work for SS7 dont you? My next door neighbours son is the European VP, doing pretty well for himself.

I wouldnt spend that sort of money on my friends. Im not tight, but Im not that generous. Ive never been a borrower or a lender except in the most dire circumstances.
I always look for the best deals, but I have been know to make a lot of impulse purchases.

I think my main difference is that when ever I've needed money for a short period of time they are always a couple of friends I could count on, and this could be for 20 quid or 10k I dont think it would matter.

So I do my best to repay the favour.

No, I work for a project management company, we do contracts for SS7 and a lot of operators and a few major contractors.

Yeah stick with it .... I've been a contractor for far too long and its all caught up with me. No career - no value  The $$$s are no substitue

i look back at some of the stuff i have bought 10 yrs or so ago that i simply didn't need, oh how i wished i'd saved it :( dvd's and cd's that i watched or listened to once must be nearing £2k's worth. clothes aswell but that was a phase in my life that i was happy to be in at the time.

I see what you mean, but 20 quid between friends is nothing, however I wouldnt go past a few hundred quid with friends. As far as I can see, I wouldnt ever put myself in the situation of asking friends or family to borrow large sums of money. The only person I would ever ask for that would be my mum, but only in an emergency.

contract.

KaHn

Was going to say!

Don't think i would ever have the balls to go contracting, rewards are high but so are the risks, i value job security. Someone from work has just left to take an oil & gas job in Aus they really need people and are paying 1k a day to get them.

Perhaps i will make the leap on day.

Holy ****, i've gotta change job

Google process engineers or pipeline engineers, close to 1k/day

Its very hard to get into with the right company and even harder to be good enough to go contract.

Also thats not that much tbh. For example as staff I see the CTR's and I get charged out at 700/day.

It's all relative, theirs only one friend who I would go to for money and he knows the same would be reciprocated in a heart beat. Thankfully it was only after a bad time with an ex and I needed money to move to aberdeen, I could have gotten it from other means but it was easier and safer to get from a friend.

I'm hopeless with money, my girlfriend gets very angry if I've bought something, am trying to save for a house. I'm getting much better though. Only on a modest income but I need to appreciate its value more.

I know (a very select few) people who are staff that are paid the equivalent of £100 an hour because they are that good.

I know contractors on double that but like as been said in this country it becomes about how to spend it.

It's an expensive industry, for example i get charged out at over £600 a day and closer to £800 if you want my time outside of the UK, i don't get to see that sort of money but it just goes to show that even for a Project Engineer you could earn big bucks if you've got a good reputation.

That doesn't make sense - What's that £130k pa ?

The best salary I pulled in my life was £96k and if I remember there was a void 100-130 where it was pointless earning more due to the tax.

no. I am very careful to decide whether or not to spend money: i.e. if spending it on x will bring me more pleasure than y and I tend not to be too frivolous.
