Ok, so I'm planning on going to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Australia, at around this time next year with the GF.

Going to stretch the travel over the period of about a year.

How much roughly would we need to save for this? At the moment it's just an idea, but we definitely want to do it after weve done some homework.

I know I'm very vague on the info on what we want to do, but we've only had the idea recently and would like to hear from anyone who has done this kind of thing. What would be our best bet for accommodation etc? Hostels?

Thank you :)

In SE asia Excluding flights budget on £150 each per week to live a fairly ok backpacker lifestyle.

Australia I hope you can get a WHV because with exchange rates the way they are its expensive.

I spent 18 month travelling just over 3 years ago , best thing I have ever done if you exclude my wedding day!

In simple terms save as much as you can and you will have a flipping blast!

I think I spent 400 quid a week in Australia excluding flights, with my GF spending about the same. This was for hostels, car hire, stuff to do, etc.

Pffft Seriously your looking at £150 each to do day trips travel from country to country and have a few beers.

On my own I was spending just short of £200 a week

Unless my calculations are way off here then the 7*20 that FabienO suggested is £140 for the week so while at the low end of the spectrum it's not that far off what you said initially?

I'd have thought a lot depends on what people class as an adequate lifestyle and whether there is any intention to get some work during the trip, if you can get work with cheap/free accomodation thrown in that will go a long way to help out.

He also said reality you will spend no where near as much;)

I was spending around £4 on on a room maybe same again on food. A few beers and then say £5-7 left over daily for trips.

Most of my time was spent snorkling and if I went inland seeing the usual backpacker hot spots.

All i'm saying is I was on a tight budget ,granted I like more than my fair share of beer:p

Before I went travelling I got told whatever you think is enough , double it and you'll be good ;)

Thorn tree forums is the bible for this sort of stuff, cracking bunch over there and I don't contribute as much as I should :(

I'd imagine budgets will vary a lot depending on what kind of traveller you are. You also need to bear in mind that Australia is going to be far more expensive than your other destinations.

If you plan to stay away for about a year then you might want to work while you're away. I know people who've travelled Australia (when it was cheaper) and worked in bars and restaurants. They loved it, ate well, made decent tips and lived relatively cheaply (but I doubt it's like that any more).

I think Thailand have recently changed their visa requirements. Travellers arriving by air automatically receive a 30 day tourist visa if travelling from the UK (and a few other countries). If you want to stay for longer you'll either need to leave and then re-enter the country (you might need a multiple entry visa for this) or apply for an extended visa before arriving.

Be sure to get decent travel insurance, too. I've seen people recommend this site for travellers heading to Asia: World Nomads.

Alone, I went for 19 months

Wow...you guys have motivated me now. After my divorce is done next year this is exactly what I wanna do. Ive saved up a decent amount and now its time to see the rest of this planet. I want to go to the same places the OP does except Australia. I wanna do Japan (sister has a best friend there so sorted for accomodation) and also Singapore (got an aunt there). But Vietname, Cambodia etc I will have to rough it.

Hong Kong

Malaysia

That was my trip country by country. I was working in New Zealand but used my 'round the world' flight to get to Fiji as that was part of the plan but abandoned that ticket once I got to Fiji and then paid to get back to NZ. Then went back to Oz for a 2 week holiday. Then bagged a $1 flight to Tokyo for 6 days. Then paid my way back to UK through SE Asia again.

Had such an awesome time in every country I went to, no hassles, no problems and made loads of good friends !!

Really? because me and my fiancée did 7 months around the world, and asia for about £30 a day, while moving every 2-3 days. Granted I didn't do Thailand, but I did do Vietnam (£20p/d) and China (£30p/d). The OP's countries, except Australia are cheaper than those.

Japan was like £80p/d :( + Shinkansen rail pass

Flight: Hong Kong
Flight: Vietnam
Train: China
Flight: South Korea
Boat : Japan
Flight: Hawaii
Flight: Canada
Flight: Miami
Boat : Bahamas
Boat : St. Thomas
Boat : Turks & Caicos Islands
Boat : Puerto Rico
Flight: Mexico
Bus : Guatemala
Bus : Honduras
Bus : Nicaragua
Bus : Costa Rica
Bus : Ecuador
Bus : Bolivia
Bus : Chile
Bus : Argentina
Flight: UK

Total cost £21k for two people
Total time 7-months

Costs factor in clothes, visa, rail passes, flights, vaccinations and so on. By the time we left we had about 11k left. £50p/d. Was cheaper in some countries, more expensive in others. Also in those costs is a luxury room Caribbean cruise :P

Lots of information there! I like the look of the thorn tree forums too, thanks for that. Ill post there too (hopefully when we've got bit more of an idea what we want to do)

I now have a rough idea now of how much we need I guess. We might be able to stay with my dads brother in australia, which will save us hell of a lot.

Thanks for the input dudes/dudettes! :)

I never really kept tabs on my money over the whole period. I left the uk with about £5k, paid for all flights already. Received tax back of about £850 about 5 months into trip. Birthday and Xmas money came in too. I did some cash in hand work in oz which got me by for a bit too. Then when I got a contract job in nz I was on equivalent $40k but only had 6 month contract so that was about £11k at the going rate at time. When I got home I had racked up £5k on credit card too so yeah around £20k or more.

Well worth it though. I loved New Zealand.
