hi guys need some advice im looking to upgrade my pc im a newbie with a small budget and would appreciate your help.

my spec at the moment

Intel core2 6420 @2.13ghz
3.5gb ram
radeon hd 6800
windows xp pro
250 gig hd

What's your total budget?

You could get a second hand Q6600 for ~£50 and a 460GTX for ~£80 - that would be a considerable overall boost.

What do you use the rig for mainly?

Or you consider selling all your parts separately and buying a budget AMD spec or if you have the pennies a SB setup.

You could build a respectable rig around an AMD quad core for approx £300 (cpu, memory, MB and gfx card) but you would need to spend another ~£100 if you wanted a Sandybridge setup (this would be the ideal if you could afford it).

However, you have a relatively small hdd and if it's not a SATA you would be limited in what board you could buy. Also, your PSU maybe a factor - what is the brand and wattage?

Have you considered buying second hand - as you can get some great deals on i5 760s and MBs.

i beg to differ. with the i3 2100 being faster than the phenom II X4 955 it would be about the same for a sandybridge rig (as ling as the HDD is SATA)

thanks for the help guys my hardrive is a sata can you give me the exact links to buy for the 300 my psu is 500w

Is the optical drive SATA also

What is the make and model of the PSU?

If your looking at just a CPU/RAM/Board upgrade?

This is the closest comparison between your current CPU and the i5 2500K I can find - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/61?vs=288

I know/agree i was just giving a very quick example - but my bad re the SB setup i should have said 2500K rather than just SB.

my psu is 500w

Do you know the brand/model?

my power supply is a high power plus 500w i also have a freezer pro 7 ac in their aswell

Well the freezer pro7 wont fit the new board unless its a later rev2? - http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=4.? - did it come with socket1156/55 fittings?, luckily the retail CPU comes with a stock intel heatsink that you can also use to overclock to say 4GHz.

The PSU is really no good, never ever skimp on the PSU quality is the motto I use, its like the heart of the PC. it fails and it can kill other parts connected to it.

So it does fit the new boards, thats a bonus then.

For a PSU for the graphics card in your sig (doesnt matter much if its a 6850 or 6870) and a sandybridge CPU/RAM/MOBO setup,

Windows 7 home 64bit, it includes media centre and is basically the default choice of OS.

If you watch a lot of movies have you considered a tv card to record shows and pause tv? This is done in media centre incase you should ask "what is media centre".

Well its not a K cpu, so theres no overclocking with it. also if your main usage is gaming and a bit of internet browsing and some other small things, a i5 2500K is a cheaper and better option.

You can't link to competitors on here fella, best remove that link ;)

I agree with stulid. BF3 will support hyperthreading which is what the i7 has over the i5. However we dont know what difference it's going to make yet and if I was buying an i5 or i7 I would still opt for the "K" spec.
