Verified by VISA [rant]

I would suggest it's not a Visa issue but the implementation with the particular bank. Barclays cause no issues for me. neither does Nationwide and they implement it differently.

Don't think I've ever used my VISA Debit Card online!

My Mastercard Credit Card though :(. Some retailers it comes up with some Lloyds Clicksafe ****. Can never remember my password to that! Was ordering from OcUK once and it forced to me register before I could spend my money, so I did it in a rush!

I had issues with my VbV password before until I saw that when you create a new password, it will only accept a certain number of digits, so say my password is going to be ocukrawks111, when creating it I can only enter ocukrawk. But when it asks for your password to pay for something it will let you enter ocukrawks111 so although your password is correct, as far as vbv is concerned it isn't.

Since that, trouble free

I had awful issues setting it up properly, had to make a few calls to my bank but now that I have actually remembered my password it is alright. I sympathise though. It is a pain.

I set it up about a year ago with Natwest. Can't say I have ever had a problem seeing as I know what my password is.

Update since last thread... Santander really have screwed up my account it seems like their take over of A&L didn't factor into account Girobank accounts from foreign customers.

From what I can read Girobank is now part of santander. I need to transfer money every month to a UK account and I'm looking to move. Most UK banks seem to offer some very corporate off shore accounts for non UK residents but I'm looking for a bog standard savings account with a debit card as my monthly transfer is a pittance.

Still not manged to sort out the verified by visa problem as I can't seem to change anything on their site it doesn't accept any UK postcode I enter as it doesn't match my address (which is Belgian and which Santander know is Belgian) :(

My card expired in June I've phoned in May, July, August (was home so actually taked to branch manager) and now September. Every time been promised a new card is "on it's way"TM

Still no new card and obviously their computer is tellin them one thing and the system is doing something else (ie not sending my card)

So if anyone with any bank experience can recommend me a savings account for non UK resident I'd appreciate it.

cheers,

J

I assume by VbV we are talking about 3D secure? the little iframed box where you have to enter a card password?

if so, its a fantastic idea and I have never had a problem with it. On all the e-commerce site I build we require it for any card transaction.

Muppets tend to complain about Verified By Visa. (Usually they forget their password and then get extremely angry and irrational)

It's actually a great system. I've only ever had one problem logging in and it was resolved after a 5 minute phone call.

Likewise.

+1

I actually like it. 3DSecure is not something that is going away anytime soon people, it's becoming a PCI compliance standard afaik?

I'd rather have a password layer on top if someone steals my card and goes to use it online where I perhaps have it stored.

Verified By Visa is a royal pita. Everytime I use it it tells me my password is incorrect, so I create a new one and make a note of it in my password manager. Next time I need to verify, I get told the password is incorrect. This happens every single time.

Concerning that one of the biggest merchants in the world can't even manage to build a user friendly verification system.

I had a similar problem like this.
Registering a new password because my old one wouldn't work.
Then the new one wouldn't work the next time I tried it.

I figured out that the password I was registering was too long, even though it was being accepted initially.
The password I was using was like 15 characters long but only the first 8 were being recognised.

Might be worth a try to put in the first 8 characters of your password or put in a new 8 character password.

DO NOT GO NEAR A VISA CARD. You will regret it mate. Trust me

Lol.

I have no problems with Verified by Visa :).

My VbV password is 9 characters long and works fine :p.

umm been using it since natwest went from Maestro to Visa and never had a single problem in about 200 transactions.

How good VbV is would depend on the bank implementing it imo. Basically, the website you are buying from will redirect you (either completely, or through a frameset or something) to the website of the issuing bank's site and it's down to them to verify you.

So if you find it rubbish, don't blame VbV, switch to a different bank.

I've never really had a problem. Granted, I never, ever remember my password because Barclay's password requirements don't fit in with any of the passwords I normally use, but I just reset it every time and then it goes through.

Same here. It's next to useless for security, so I assume that its main purpose is to lay the ground for banks to work towards blaming cardholders for fraud.

EDIT: Maybe not that bad. It does require your date of birth to reset the password, which casual thieves wouldn't have. So it's not as bad as I said it was.
