How will you deal with your children and their access to porn on the internet?

After something in the Christmas toy thread I've just wondered what people do with regards their kids access to porn on the internet.

Growing up I had the internet fairly early on compared to most and I had a computer in my bedroom connected to a network. My parents didn't have any knowledge of ways of stopping me doing whatever I wanted and so the world of internet pornography was wide open to me.

How are parents dealing with it now? How do you think you will deal with it in the future? I know you can stop them getting access to some stuff with various software and stuff on the routers etc, but the reality is that I am a perfectly functioning member of society despite my unfettered access I had. As are millions of others.

Do you go on full attack and use every tool at your disposal to prevent your teenagers having access to stuff that you had access to to save their souls?
Do you let them get on with it and lay down some guidlines (no pay sites, no horses, don't let your mother catch you at it, wash your own socks lol).
Or do you just pretend that they aren't fapping every chance they get and pray to god you never walk in on them while they are watching "gilfs go wild 17"?

How are the parents here that have children in that sort of 12-15 age bracket dealing with it? And did you have access to pornography at that age?

I know we have quite an age range on here with lots of 16-18 year olds and plenty of members in the age bracket where they have teenage kids so it'll be interesting to see what the different views might be.

This is a family friendly forum so do keep it clean.

Jumping the gun a little here aren't we asking for advice on something 15years into the future. Don't worry about it, you might get hit by a bus tomorrow. Live for today.

Let your future kids watch porn, or get a net nanny, they're the two choices really but I'm sure you already knew that.

It's impossible. Not all porn producers and providers will move to the xxx domain which would make it extremely easy for people at home to block that extension. Instead the technophobes will rant to the government until the government gets involved and starts blocking it instead. And that's a slippery slope.

If I had kids I might lock the PC down somewhat, but only to give them a challenge to break it. Then if I caught my potential son watching porn I could just pat him on the head and say "you did well my son".

After all, if I was in that situation I'd just try and find some way around it.

I dont care about it for me now, I just wondered what people are doing now.

This guy at my old work had his home network completely locked down, his 4 kids ranging from 10-18 couldn't even get on facebook, which I thought was a bit sad really. There are lots of software solutions to block this sort of thing. Who knows if the internet as we know it will exist in 15 years time.

Point them in the direction of some well known 'tube' type sites. At least it will minimize viruses whilst they hunt around god knows where looking for it! I very much doubt you can stop a testosterone charged teenager finding porn if they wanted to.

Why would you want to stop your kids from doing something that you enjoyed doing at their age?

Did watching porn in your teens damage or somehow emotionally scar you to the point that you feel that it is simply bad for other teenagers to be doing the same thing?

I first looked up porno when I was 12. I accidentalied 3 or 4 times within an hour and was very very sore afterwards :(

I suppose that soreness is a serious life threatening condition or something.

Add all major porn site names to a keyword filter list on your router's block list and add an exception for your own computer's IP address.

Then modify the blocked message page on your router to say that the block has been logged and that you will have words with them later. Notice later that when they see you they look all shifty. You will know they've been trying to browse porn!

Simples?

If they are a child, then set-up enhanced content filtering with category blocking and IP exclusions for the people in the house who are "old" enough to look at that sort of stuff, if they are in their mid-late teens then I guess this would be acceptable, who didnt start looking at porn when they were in their mid-late comprehensive school years?

whatever protection you put on the network the kids will find a way round it within a week.

Thats my point. Would you want to block it or just let them get on with it? You maybe had lots of access and you (probably) turned out fine.

Not only that, it is kind of educational :p
