Hi guys looking @ buying an ipad 2 or should i get a different make will use it for internet browsing email and for traveling on longhaul flights.

I have an iPad sized tablet (Touchpad) and an HTC Flyer, I took both on a flight to Chicago and found the form factor of the 7 inch flyer much better for travelling. Also no need to worry about converting videos etc.

16gb Flyer is about £310, 32gb 3G one about £380. They also have MicroSD card slots so when I was travelling I had a card with films on and another with kids programmes for my son. Honeycomb works on it (there is a perfectly working leaked ROM), although Gingerbread with Tablet Sense which it is supplied with was really well done.

I've used the ipad as well as my own asus transformer, and recommend the asus hands down. Though I would wait for the quad core version if you are thinking of buying now.

You should definitely get the iPad 2 as long as you are happy with the various aspects of it such as the size, not expecting Flash sites to work, etc.

It will do what you want without issue and is backed by the best app store by a country mile, slickest software, nicest build quality and design (IMO), best media support for legal media (via iTunes), awesome email client, the list goes on.

It's also the most user friendly for people that aren't really too clued up about these things, which is a bonus. I can't really add much more but if you have any questions, ask away.

I really can't see how an iPad 2 could be described as the best tablet when the key words for the purchase are "internet browsing" and "travelling". He doesn't mention anything about apps at all.

Well, I'm going on the assumption that he would use apps, nearly everyone does. It's the key strength of iOS. Browsing is pretty much tied unless you require Flash (as a heavy internet user I don't miss it at all, it's mostly adverts anyway).

I'm not sure how travelling comes into it, I think the 10" form factor is key on a tablet and I think 7" is a bit too small, but I know you like it and that's fair enough. Surely it depends on what you have with you, if you have a laptop bag or something then 7"/10" doesn't really matter.

You've got to say, that is a very vague OP. Need more information.

Get ipad2, they are the best out ATM, however in 12months time w8 tablets are going to annihilate the competition, unless android/apple start updating their OS at a rate we haven't seen before. It's a hard design ATM, as I wouldn't want to waste lots of money on itune films/tv programs. But then you also can't wait. So iPad and keep ape satire down and sell in 12 months.

I love how ipad users always say they don't miss flash? Its so weird?! What internet are you using :p

I do miss it occasionally. However many sites have moved away from flash or included html5.
There was an article recently and I'm sure it was something along the lines of 80% of the top 95000 websites now don't use flash or have an html5 alternative and the number is growing, especially as Microsoft has now confirmed their dislike of flash and support for html5, so we are in a transition period.

Also only android3 devices have flash. With all the cheaper models still running. On 2.2/3 which doesn't have flash.

Or maybe it's because they don't actually miss it?

Nearly all the sites I use don't use Flash at all. Most Flash content I see online is advertising stuff. Things like embedded videos on here work fine as there is support for that anyway.

Flash isn't that great on Android either, most of the sites I've tried aren't all that good, it normally feels sluggish and unresponsive, even on the most powerful hardware.

Most sites are moving away from it now as well. On top of that, most important Flash stuff is accommodated on iOS and the proper, well made apps always work better than the in-browser equivalent.

It should be there as an option, certainly, but it isn't an issue for the majority of people, they're just being saved from adverts! :p

Jesus, he wants the best tablet for internet browsing and travel, not meaningless statistics from Apple fanboys.

FWIW I use flash on my (much cheaper than iPad) tablet all the time for streaming of QPR games.

Lol, who's the fan boy. The stats where in response to someone else. Not the op.

The iPad is still the best tool for what he wants, not only does it have a better app store. You can actually get films and tv legally.

I would say look at one of the 7" to 8" tablets being released in the next few months. The size makes it easier to fit into a side pocket in your hand luggage. Hopefully the Lenovo A1 will be available in the UK as it is meant to be quite cheap. The Archos G9 8" is around £200 for the base model. Another advantage is since these tablets are cheap they won't be such a target for thieves on your travels!!:p

There might also be a firesale on the RIM PlayBook too.

The best thing is for you to go into a shop and check the different sized tablets which are available. Think of what hand buggage you take with you too.

I disagree on size. You need a bag or something to carry a 7", anything you can fit that into a 10" or even bigger would fit. 10" still easily fits on to train back of seat trays and the like and is far better for web browsing and film watching. 10" is probably the most ideal size you can get.

Blimey, it doesn't take much to get the toys out of the pram does it!

Relax :p

Indeed!

I'm no fanboy, I have 5 different tablets with three different operating systems. I own 2 iOS devices in total. You however turn up in every single tablet thread singing off the same hymn sheet no matter what the thread subject is.
